The intersection of architectural heritage and textile artistry takes center stage with the launch of Patty Studios, a fresh Portland-based design brand making its debut with a striking collection of handcrafted rugs. Featuring restrained grids, playful motifs, and decorative edges, the inaugural lineup comes in a diverse variety of styles while sharing a common thread of elegant sophistication. Drawing heavy inspiration from the wild gardens and timeless architecture of the South of France, the studio’s six foundational designs translate these evocative regional influences into a sophisticated vocabulary of pattern and color.

The collection marks the official launch of Patty Studios, founded by the creative trio of Candace Cohu, Ally Hasche, and Max Pluenneke. Cohu and Hasche are well known as the founders of Pat Austin Studio, a prominent interior design firm based in Portland, Oregon. For some time, the duo had shared a desire to collaborate with Pluenneke, whose background in the industry runs deep. Growing up immersed in the world of textiles, Pluenneke spent his formative years cleaning and repairing rugs at his family’s traditional gallery before pursuing formal studies in graphic design.

Driven by a shared vision, the trio ultimately created Patty Studios as a dedicated outlet for considered furnishings and home accessories. The brand’s pieces are intentionally conceived to live harmoniously within their own high-end interior design projects while offering broad appeal for external clients seeking distinctive, artful additions to their spaces. The newly unveiled rugs are available in numerous rich colorways and are meticulously crafted from a blend of Himalayan wool and Chinese silk, woven in varying proportions over a sturdy cotton foundation.

Behind the aesthetic appeal of the collection lies a deep commitment to responsible craftsmanship and environmental stewardship. Max Pluenneke emphasizes that material longevity and ecological mindfulness were central to the brand’s development from day one. According to the studio, the rugs are entirely handmade in Nepal, utilizing sustainable, earth-derived yarns. Crucially, these natural materials are never exposed to harsh or harmful chemicals during the production process. This meticulous approach ensures that the finished pieces maintain an exceptionally high standard of quality capable of withstanding decades of daily use, while remaining completely biodegradable at the end of their generations-long lifespans.

The individual designs within the collection carry a distinct heirloom quality, each telling its own visual story rooted in European landscapes and structural forms. Among them is the Elysium rug, which features an intricate relief pattern of florals. Its available colorways are thoughtfully curated to capture contrasting moods, ranging dynamically from the fresh, soft atmosphere of a morning meadow to the deep, dramatic allure of a nighttime oasis.

Another standout design, Labelle, immediately draws the eye with an undulating border that evokes the comforting charm of crimped pie edges. However, the designers reveal that the motif is actually drawn directly from the distinctive génoise rooflines characteristic of the sun-drenched Côte d’Azur.

For those drawn to linear and architectural aesthetics, the Puff and Puff Silky rugs offer low-pile grid patterns with subtle textural differences. The standard Puff design evokes the timeless feel of limestone tiles found across coastal France, whereas the Puff Silky variation translates the sleek, reflective look of a rain-slick cobblestone street into a sumptuous, tactile grid underfoot.

Continuing the architectural theme, the Rue rug transforms built urban forms into a repeating geometric pattern that successfully captures what the studio describes as the charming vim of a village street. Rounding out the six-part collection is the When You Were a Tulip rug, a whimsical yet balanced tapestry that seamlessly combines geometric, organic, and floral motifs while retaining a thoroughly measured and refined aesthetic.

All six designs in the inaugural collection are made to order, with pricing available by the square foot upon request directly through the brand’s official website.
