At the very top of the list of releases is the new Bulgari Octo Finissimo Dual Time x Vianney Halter, a daring timepiece that successfully shoehorns the distinct steampunk aesthetic pioneered by Jeff Barnes and independent watchmaking icon Vianney Halter into Bulgari’s sleek, ultra-minimalist Octo Finissimo platform.
The fascinating confluence of these two radically different design languages mostly succeeds, whether rendered in utilitarian sandblasted titanium or lavish 18k rose gold. The latter execution immediately calls to mind Vianney Halter’s universally beloved and historically significant Antiqua perpetual calendar. Yet, when paired with the flat, wide, and angular geometry of the Octo case, the collaboration takes on a distinct, unmistakable personality entirely its own.
Initial Thoughts on an Unlikely Collaboration
Bulgari is certainly no stranger to creative collaborations, having frequently opened its signature architectural platform to external artists, architects, and designers under the guidance of product director Fabrizio Buonamassa Stigliani. Over the years, Stigliani has carefully developed the Octo Finissimo into an ideal canvas for artistic experimentation, lending its slim footprint to renowned architects like Tadao Ando, painters, and even tattoo artists, almost always yielding compelling results.
The inherent versatility of the Octo Finissimo stems largely from its singular character. Its wide, aggressively tapering integrated bracelet and ultra-slim mechanical construction make it immediately recognizable on the wrist, whether it bears the Bulgari logo or features dramatic external decorative treatments.
Similarly, Vianney Halter is arguably one of the most prolific collaborators working within the realm of independent haute horlogerie. At Geneva Watch Days alone, visitors could find three different watch brands exhibiting timepieces bearing his unmistakable design signature. Over the years, the celebrated French watchmaker has lent his creative vision to an array of brands, ranging from independent boutique houses like Massena Lab to accessible institutions like Louis Erard, and even to upstart technical firms from Shenzhen like Behrens.
The new joint effort with Bulgari is offered in two distinct configurations, each presenting vastly different visual personalities and matching price points. The sandblasted titanium edition feels and wears much closer to a traditional Octo Finissimo, courtesy of its subdued, monochromatic color palette and iconic integrated bracelet. Conversely, the 18k rose gold variant leans heavily into the retro-futuristic spirit of Vianney Halter’s legendary Antiqua, offering a warmer, more complex aesthetic that demands attention.
That high-end rose gold variant is priced similarly to an Antiqua as well. With a retail price set at CHF 108,000, it commands more than double the going market rate for a luxury daily wearer like the Vacheron Constantin Overseas Dual Time in the same precious metal. This steep pricing strategy means there is a significant amount riding on the appeal of the Halter and Barnes steampunk design language. For some collectors, it might prove to be a challenging sell, particularly when core signature design details can be acquired for less than CHF 5,000 through previous collaborative efforts with Louis Erard. Nevertheless, there are undoubtedly at least 15 dedicated collectors worldwide for whom this uncompromising mix of industrial steampunk and Italian architectural minimalism will prove utterly irresistible.
The Antiqua Reimagined Through an Italian Lens
The Antiqua-inspired design gives the Octo Finissimo a compelling, instrument-panel-like visual complexity. Particular details, such as the crescent-shaped sapphire crystal window housing the day-night indicator, feel as though they were lifted straight from the pages of a classic Jules Verne adventure novel.
The case finishing follows suit, introducing concentric circular brushing along the uppermost bezel that contrasts sharply with the fine, uniform sandblasted treatment covering the rest of the case architecture. The riveted bezels surrounding the primary time display positioned at the one o’clock position, along with the day-night indicator, bulge slightly outward. However, they carefully stop short of completely overhanging the edge of the case. This specific design constraint was likely mandated by Bulgari’s design team to ensure that the core geometric silhouette and recognizable profile of the Octo Finissimo remain fundamentally undiluted.
This strict design logic probably also explains why Bulgari opted to utilize the standard, flat Octo Finissimo crown rather than adopting the deeply grooved, studded crown design that is so common on Vianney Halter’s own independent creations and his past collaborative projects with Louis Erard.
On the wrist, however, the 40.5 mm case does not wear quite like a traditional Antiqua. The relatively wide lug spacing tends to ride up noticeably on the ulnar styloid of individuals with bonier wrists, leading to a somewhat awkward ergonomic fit compared to standard round watches.
A Bit Thicker, But Still Exceptionally Thin
While the timepiece remains unmistakably an Octo at its core, it is slightly less finissimo than its ultra-thin brethren. This is due to the trio of protruding porthole-style bezels that elevate the total height of the watch to 9.7 mm at its absolute thickest point. While 9.7 mm is still plenty thin by standard mechanical watchmaking standards, it is roughly 50 percent thicker than the standard-bearer of the collection, which has long amazed the industry with its paper-thin profile.
Setting the protruding bezels aside, the main body of the titanium or rose gold case measures a remarkably slim 7.7 mm in thickness. Inside this protective shell beats the new caliber BVF 200. In short, the BVF 200 is a wide, flat automatic movement equipped with an inset micro-rotor and a relatively small balance wheel. Despite its slender vertical profile, the movement manages to pack a respectable 60 hours of power reserve into its architecture. Functionally, the BVF 200 operates as a so-called caller GMT. A dedicated pusher integrated into the case band advances the secondary time zone hour hand in discrete, convenient increments, synchronizing the second time zone directly with the day-night indicator subdial.
The overall movement finishing leans toward the industrial side rather than the hyper-finished hand-bevelling one might traditionally expect from a six-figure watch. However, that design choice tends to align naturally with overtly design-oriented, contemporary timepieces. Notably, the movement is constructed utilizing conventional securing screws, differing from the thematic octagonal bolts seen in the BVF 100 movement that debuted earlier in the year—a caliber that was likely developed somewhat in tandem with the BVF 200 project.
