Checking In: A Smart Stay In An Overlooked Corner of Paris

My appreciation for a full-length mirror increases considerably during fashion month. It is something I usually take for granted during quieter periods of the year, but you would be surprised at how many hotels across Europe lack them entirely. (Cue the mental image of myself at a previous hotel stay, precariously standing on a bathroom sink just to catch a glimpse of my full outfit before running out the door.) Thankfully, upon arriving at the citizenM Paris Gare de Lyon, there was a massive, perfectly positioned full-length mirror right by the entrance as I walked in. It quickly became clear that we were off to a very good start.

I stayed at this contemporary and conveniently located property during the height of Paris Fashion Week, a time when my hospitality requirements were refreshingly basic: somewhere clean and serene to come back to at the end of a grueling day, an exceptionally comfortable bed to guarantee precious hours of rest, and a location that made navigating the bustling French capital as effortless as possible. The citizenM delivered on every single one of those fronts. In fact, its biggest selling point is right there in the name. Situated directly next to the Gare de Lyon, the hotel places one of the city’s major transportation hubs immediately within reach.

You might initially think: why on earth would anyone travel to a romantic, picturesque city like Paris and choose to stay right next to a train station of all places? It is a fair question for a leisurely vacation, but if you are someone who plans on running all over the city from dawn until dusk—jumping from one arrondissement to another for shows, appointments, and fittings—it just might be the smartest travel decision you make all season.

The property is nestled in the 12th arrondissement, strategically positioned right between the bustling Gare de Lyon and the serene banks of the Seine. The overall vibe is decidedly contemporary and casual, featuring vibrant, colorful communal spaces that naturally invite guests to settle in with a laptop or a book. It is an ideal setup for working trips, solo travelers, and anyone who prioritizes seamless transportation above traditional, out-of-the-way luxury aesthetics. The hotel boasts 338 thoughtfully engineered rooms equipped with extra-large king beds, luxurious rainfall showers, and tablet-controlled lighting and blinds. And, of course, that coveted full-length mirror serves as the ultimate photo spot for a pre-show outfit check.

The Rooms

The rooms follow citizenM’s signature compact and contemporary formula, anchored by a massive bed as the central focal point, complemented by stylish red architectural and design accents. When I first unlocked the door and walked into my room, a thoughtful welcome awaited me: two fancy, effervescent juices in glass bottles, alongside delicious chocolate cookies and a hand-drawn, handwritten welcome note wishing me a wonderful stay. It was a remarkably sweet touch that immediately elevated the arrival experience.

The bed, however, was undeniably the star of the show. Mine took up the entire end of the room, positioned right beneath a huge window that framed the urban landscape outside. It was cloud-soft and remarkably cozy. During fashion month, when sleep becomes an intensely precious and exceedingly rare commodity, resting on a mattress that supportive makes all the difference in the world.

A sleek bedside tablet controls all the room’s core features, including the television, lighting, ambient temperature, and motorized blackout blinds, which I made sure to pull down securely every single night to block out the morning light. It is an exceptionally efficient and modern setup, though travelers should keep one practical consideration in mind: if you are someone who packs heavy for an extended trip, the wardrobe space is quite compact, leaning into the minimalist philosophy of the brand. One small detail that I genuinely loved was the television positioned directly in front of the bed, creating the ultimate feeling of modern hotel luxury. I often found myself wishing I had the spare time to enjoy a genuinely cozy movie night in. Perhaps next time!

The Breakfast & Dining

Breakfast every morning quickly established itself as a reliable highlight of my stay. Having a quality meal available right downstairs made starting the chaotic day significantly easier. Before stepping

out into the swirling energy of Paris, having breakfast on-site meant checking off one major daily decision before the morning rush even began.

The hotel’s canteenM serves a comprehensive breakfast buffet featuring both hot and cold options, including an assortment of fresh pastries. Notably, the pain au chocolat was exceptionally flaky and buttery, holding its own against traditional Parisian boulangeries. Beyond the morning rush, food and drinks remain available around the clock to accommodate erratic schedules. I also deeply appreciated the cozy restaurant space as a practical place to work. On an intensive trip like this, a hotel’s true utility extends far beyond the confines of the bedroom, and having a comfortable place to sit with a laptop and a coffee can make a massive difference to a traveling professional.

Choosing to stay right next to a major train station might seem like an unconventional choice for a high-profile fashion week trip, but the proximity to Gare de Lyon turned out to be the hotel’s absolute greatest asset. Getting around Paris was remarkably seamless, allowing me to easily make it to the Victoria Beckham presentation in the 1st arrondissement just as efficiently as I could catch a train down to Issey Miyake’s show in the 14th. Paris Fashion Week is an inherently overwhelming and chaotic environment, so staying close to a major transport hub successfully freed up a tremendous amount of much-needed mental bandwidth, making the hotel a perfect, highly practical base for the week.

Final Thoughts

Reflecting on the experience, what I remember most vividly about the citizenM Paris Gare de Lyon is simply how easy it made my time in the city. I slept deeply and comfortably, enjoyed my morning coffee and fresh croissant without fuss, and was consistently greeted by warm, smiling front desk staff whenever I crossed the lobby. Getting around all corners of Paris was an absolute breeze entirely because of the strategic proximity to the transportation network. Sometimes, the absolute best thing a well-designed hotel can do is quietly take the friction out of the rest of your day, and citizenM accomplished precisely that.
