YouTube is expanding the capabilities of its conversational artificial intelligence feature, “Ask YouTube,” positioning the tool to act as a dedicated shopping companion for its massive global audience. The company announced the update on Wednesday during its annual Made On YouTube event, signaling a major push into integrating generative AI directly into the platform’s commerce and discovery experiences.
The feature, which began as an experimental conversational search tool before evolving into a core component of the YouTube experience, allows users to navigate the platform using natural language queries. Rather than relying solely on rigid keywords, viewers can type complex and detailed prompts to find relevant content. YouTube’s systems then compile tailored results featuring a mix of Shorts and long-form videos, guiding users through multi-faceted topics ranging from step-by-step travel itineraries to comprehensive guides on learning new skills or exploring complex hobbyist subjects.
Under the newly announced updates, Ask YouTube will incorporate advanced functionalities designed to assist consumers during their purchasing decisions. When users search for specific products or categories, the AI tool will generate organized, structured recommendations. These recommendations will include comparative insights, such as attribute breakdowns and category comparisons tailored directly to the individual user’s stated preferences and viewing context.
Furthermore, the integration extends to the watch page itself. Viewers will soon be able to pose direct, contextual follow-up questions about products while watching a specific video, allowing for a more dynamic and interactive viewing experience without the need to leave the page or perform external web searches.
According to YouTube leadership, these feature enhancements are a direct response to evolving consumer behavior. The platform has observed that modern audiences increasingly turn to creators for product research, relying heavily on the authentic opinions, reviews, and recommendations shared by trusted content creators. This reliance on creator-led commerce has created a natural opening for AI to bridge the gap between inspiration and purchasing intent.
The rapid adoption of the underlying technology underscores its growing importance within the ecosystem. YouTube noted that over 140 million users utilized Ask YouTube to dive deeper into video content during the month of June alone. That figure represents a dramatic surge of more than 500% compared to usage statistics recorded last December.
Behind this rapid user growth is a sophisticated technical foundation. Emily Moxley, Vice President of Product Management for Viewer AI at YouTube, explained the mechanics behind the feature during a briefing with reporters ahead of the event. She noted that the experience is powered by a custom Google Gemini model capable of mapping a viewer’s most intricate and complex questions to the exact timestamp where a video provides the answer. This capability, Moxley emphasized, transforms what was once a passive search query into an instant, meaningful connection between the viewer, the video, and the creator.
The evolution of Ask YouTube reflects a broader industry trend toward conversational and utility-driven search experiences, where platforms attempt to keep users engaged by anticipating their needs and providing immediate, actionable answers. By embedding comparison features and interactive follow-up capabilities into the video discovery process, YouTube is bridging the traditional divide between entertainment content and e-commerce, offering brands and creators new avenues to connect with engaged audiences who are actively researching products.
