Rebecca Gayheart Opens Up About Final Days With Eric Dane and His Posthumously Released Memoir

Months after the tragic passing of beloved actor Eric Dane due to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), his widow, Rebecca Gayheart, is reflecting publicly on the poignant and unexpected final days they shared together. Dane, widely recognized for his iconic role as Dr. Mark Sloan—affectionately known as "McSteamy"—on the long-running medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, passed away on February 19 of this year at the age of 53. His death came roughly a year after he publicly announced his diagnosis with the rare and incurable degenerative condition, also commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

In a somber and deeply emotional interview with Maria Shriver on the Today show on Tuesday, the 55-year-old actress admitted that she and their two teenage daughters—Billie, 16, and Georgia, 14—were entirely caught off guard by the finality of his passing. Despite Dane’s prolonged and harrowing health battle, Gayheart shared that they genuinely believed he had more time left with them.

"He had gone to the hospital so many times before, and they would patch him up, so to speak, and he would come home," Gayheart told Shriver during the broadcast. "And he’d be OK. And we’d go back to the normal routine, which did change week by week." Because of this established pattern of medical crises and subsequent returns home, Gayheart explained that she and her daughters "never, ever anticipated" that his February hospitalization would be his last. In fact, Gayheart noted that she fully expected she would be back by his side before his next scheduled trip to the facility, completely unaware that the week would mark their final chapter together.

"I had no idea that that was it, that that week was going to be our last week," she said, adding that her daughters shared the same expectation. "And nor did my daughters. It really took a few days for us to understand the gravity of what that last trip to the hospital meant."

Gayheart recalled how "everything shifted" by the third day of her husband’s final hospitalization. The palpable change was evident not only in the deteriorating condition of the actor, but also in the subtle shifts in clinical communication. Even "the tone of when the doctors were talking to us, and some of the information we were given" was noticeably altered, signaling to the family that the trajectory of his illness had taken an irreversible turn.

Despite the physical toll of ALS—a rare degenerative condition that progressively impairs the nervous system and leads to widespread muscle paralysis—Dane remained mentally engaged and determined to direct his final moments. "He was fully aware it was shifting, and he was still communicating with us," Gayheart clarified. While his speech was severely compromised, she noted that she, her children, and his closest circle could understand him most of the time.

Even though Dane was no longer able to speak clearly toward the very end of his life, Gayheart emphasized that he remained entirely aware of his surroundings and maintained control over the circumstances of his passing to the best of his ability. "I remember the moment Eric decided to make some choices, and he did," she recalled. "He was in control of the way he was going to leave."

Throughout the hospitalization, Billie and Georgia stood steadfastly by their father’s side, "camping out" in the hospital room. To bring comfort and a sense of normalcy to the clinical environment, the teenagers curated a peaceful atmosphere using electric candles and a selection of their father’s favorite music, striving to "make it as nice as you can be in the hospital room."

Gayheart also addressed well-meaning individuals who attempted to minimize her grief by suggesting that a prolonged illness allows families time to prepare. "A lot of people will say, ‘Well, at least you knew, and you could have those last conversations,’" she told Shriver. "But we didn’t know, because there is no road map. No one can tell you what the journey looks like because it’s so different for every patient." She described the period as a profound balancing act where her husband was "becoming more alive mentally, but losing all of his physical abilities." Witnessing that physical deterioration, she admitted, was "really hard to watch" for their daughters, though the entire experience ultimately remains "a blur because it was just so overwhelming."

The broadcast of Gayheart’s emotional interview coincided with the official release of Dane’s posthumous memoir, My Book Of Days: A Memoir of Moments, which hit shelves on Tuesday. Written during the course of his health battle, the book lays bare the actor’s struggles with addiction, his intricate relationship with Gayheart, the initial onset of his symptoms, and the frustrating misdiagnoses he received before finally receiving what he described as a "death sentence" ALS diagnosis.

In the concluding pages of the memoir, Dane addressed his two daughters directly, offering a candid reflection on fatherhood, his deep regret that he would never walk either of them down the aisle, and his final pieces of advice. Urging them to fight until their very last breath, Dane wrote movingly about the legacy of strength he hoped to leave behind.

"This disease is slowly taking my body, but it will never take my spirit. The two of you are different people, but you’re both strong and resilient," Dane wrote. "You inherited resiliency from me. That’s my superpower." He encouraged them to face unexpected hardships with honesty, integrity, and grace, even when obstacles appear insurmountable. "I hope I’ve demonstrated that you can face anything—you can face the end of your days, you can face hell—with dignity. Fight, girls—and hold your heads high."

Elsewhere in the memoir, Dane offered precise, characteristic instructions for his own funeral, detailing his vision for everything from the venue to the menu and speeches. He expressed a desire for a large-scale gathering at a prominent venue like the iconic Hollywood Palladium, which holds a capacity of 4,000 people. Music was of paramount importance to the late actor, who requested an eclectic soundtrack spanning ’80s and ’90s alternative, new romantics, and new wave genres, naming bands such as The Smiths, The Cure, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Oasis, The Police, and Talking Heads. However, he drew a firm line against certain styles, specifying that he wanted the venue to rock without any nineties heavy rock acts like KISS or Mötley Crüe.

For the catering, Dane envisioned generous tables filled with delicious food, including sushi and the finest desserts available in Los Angeles. He also noted that he would welcome a lighthearted highlight video overseen by Gayheart, provided it was crafted in a way that would not overwhelm his teenage daughters. Regarding the eulogies, he requested a tight lineup consisting of a maximum of five speakers, each allotted a strict five-minute limit. Furthermore, he suggested incorporating a traditional Hawaiian prayer known as "Hoʻoponopono," which translates to "to make right," as a meaningful ritual for loved ones.

Dane’s journey to international stardom was cemented when he joined the cast of ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy in 2006 as the charismatic and confident plastic surgeon Dr. Mark Sloan. His personal life, however, experienced notable turbulence alongside his professional success. He married Gayheart in 2004, just two years before landing his breakout role. The couple weathered several high-profile challenges throughout their marriage, including a leaked home video scandal in 2009 and Dane’s 2011 stint in a rehabilitation facility to address an addiction to pain medication stemming from an injury. In 2017, Dane sought treatment for depression, prompting a temporary pause in production on his action drama series The Last Ship.

Later that same year, Gayheart filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences, though the two agreed to share joint custody of Billie and Georgia while Dane paid alimony. Despite the filing, the divorce was never officially finalized. In the weeks leading up to Dane’s public ALS announcement, the couple chose to call off the divorce proceedings entirely, remaining close friends and dedicated co-parents. Gayheart remained a pillar of support for the actor throughout his physical decline, even as both individuals continued to navigate dating other people.

My Book Of Days: A Memoir of Moments is available now, serving as both a lasting testament to Dane’s resilience and a final message of love and guidance to his family.
