US Ambassador to the Netherlands Joe Popolo Donated $1 Million to Trump’s White House Ballroom Project, Leaked Documents Show

October 16, 2026

The United States ambassador to the Netherlands, Joe Popolo, personally contributed $1 million toward President Donald Trump’s controversial new White House ballroom, according to a newly leaked list of project donors.

The confidential records, which were obtained and published by The Washington Post, reveal that Ambassador Popolo made the substantial financial gift late last year. The donation occurred approximately two months after the prominent businessman and political appointee assumed his diplomatic post in The Hague. When approached for comment regarding the contribution and its alignment with his diplomatic responsibilities, Popolo declined to provide any further statements to the newspaper.

The leaked document encompasses financial contributions made up to the end of September and records a total of 67 distinct donations, each amounting to $10,000 or more. Combined, these pledges have accumulated a staggering $333 million for the massive architectural undertaking. A detailed breakdown of the donor registry indicates that corporations and executives from the technology, artificial intelligence, and defense manufacturing sectors accounted for a remarkably large share of the financial backing. Furthermore, a portion of the contributors chose to remain entirely anonymous, collectively accounting for $77 million of the total funds raised.

According to reporting by The Washington Post, approximately half of the total capital raised for the White House construction project originated from companies or individuals who currently have active business interests, pending regulatory reviews, or ongoing matters before the federal government. Prior to the leak of these secret documents, Democratic lawmakers had repeatedly pressed the administration for transparency, formally requesting the complete donor list on multiple occasions, but their inquiries were consistently met with refusal.

The independent fund established to manage the project’s finances previously entered into an agreement with the government ensuring that the identities of its high-net-worth backers would remain confidential. Under standard legal frameworks in the United States, non-profit entities of this nature are generally not legally obligated to publicly disclose their individual donors, a loophole that critics argue shields wealthy contributors from public scrutiny while potentially granting them undue influence.

The financing of the ballroom has been a subject of intense political debate and conflicting statements since its inception. President Trump asserted last year that the ambitious construction project would be funded entirely out of his own pocket alongside contributions from a select group of close personal friends. However, the newly leaked donor list completely lacks any recorded financial contribution from the president himself.

Adding to the financial controversy, The Washington Post reported earlier this year that despite initial claims of private funding, nearly half of the ballooning construction costs—which are now officially estimated at a staggering $600 million—are actually being covered by public funds drawn from the federal treasury.

The White House has consistently dismissed and snubbed the mounting criticism surrounding the public-private funding mix and the opaque nature of the donor network. Administration officials have argued that critics would inevitably voice complaints regardless of the funding model, suggesting that detractors would find fault even if taxpayers were forced to shoulder the entire financial burden of the renovations rather than a fraction of it.

The massive new ballroom, which President Trump has publicly stated will possess the capacity to comfortably hold nearly 1,000 guests at a single time, is currently being constructed directly on the historic site of the White House east wing. That section of the executive mansion was famously demolished last year under the administration’s orders to clear space for the project. Detailed architectural and security plans for the new facility indicate that the construction also incorporates the creation of a heavily reinforced military bunker situated directly underneath the grand ballroom structure.
