H. Moser & Cie. Blurs the Lines Between Horology and Technology with the New Off-Grid Smartwatch

Following last year’s Streamliner Alpine Mechanics Edition created for the Alpine Formula 1 team, independent Swiss watchmaker H. Moser & Cie. has returned to the hybrid technology space with its second smartwatch release, introducing a thoroughly unique take on the category. Designated the Off-Grid, the new timepiece offers a streamlined, carefully curated set of programmed complications designed to occupy the creative and functional middle ground between a traditional mechanical luxury watch and a standard modern smartwatch.

In carving out this distinct conceptual space, the Off-Grid deliberately eschews many of the ubiquitous functions found in consumer electronics today, such as continuous health tracking, fitness monitoring, and relentless smartphone notifications. By stripping away these attention-draining features, the watch allows its comprehensive feature set to be accessed entirely with or without an active smartphone connection. This overarching offline philosophy explains the timepiece’s most unusual and eccentric complication: a built-in digital dictionary containing 10 essential words translated across 21 different languages, tailored for travelers finding themselves completely disconnected from cellular networks.

At first glance, the watch’s 1980s-style ana-digi display might feel more at home in a rugged G-Shock or a Seiko sports watch rather than a high-end Swiss luxury timepiece. However, H. Moser & Cie. is hardly the first traditional Swiss manufacturer to experiment with the analog-digital format. The iconic Breitling Aerospace made its historic debut more than forty years ago, and Omega later introduced the sophisticated ana-digi Speedmaster X-33 to the market in 1998.

Yet, unlike those legendary precursors, Moser has chosen to place the digital module proudly on full display beneath a semi-open-worked dial, an unorthodox approach that unmistakably reveals the brand’s deep-rooted mechanical watchmaking instincts. With the Off-Grid, the manufacture is actively attempting to bridge the gap between mechanical and electronic watchmaking, striving to deliver the practical benefits of both digital technology and traditional horology while omitting the familiar drawbacks—chiefly, the nuisance of constant notifications and fast-draining batteries that require daily charging. The moniker "Off-Grid" neatly summarizes this ambition, touching upon both the watch’s functional autonomy and its deliberate conceptual positioning away from the hyper-connected digital ecosystem.

Naturally, this bold strategy treads a delicate line within the broader collector community. Some purists and enthusiasts may decide that the watch ultimately compromises on the primary benefits of both formats, presenting itself as an expensive quartz-powered instrument that lacks the desirable, deeply integrated features of a mainstream smartwatch. Yet, the Off-Grid is built, styled, and finished much like a traditional mechanical timepiece, an impression thoroughly cemented by its familiar cushion-shaped Streamliner case architecture. It is certainly not a small watch, measuring a substantial 42.6 mm in diameter and standing 14.4 mm thick. Nevertheless, thanks to its sophisticated lug-less design and smoothly integrated rubber strap, it is engineered to wear considerably smaller on the wrist than its raw physical dimensions might initially suggest.

The Off-Grid is offered in two distinct versions, each cased in brushed stainless steel treated with either a deep blue or a dark black PVD finish. Both editions are strictly limited to 1,000 pieces worldwide and carry a retail price of US$4,900. While this price point makes the Off-Grid the most affordable watch produced by H. Moser & Cie. by a significant margin, it remains somewhat steep when evaluated against comparable high-end quartz watches available on the wider market. Established brands such as Citizen, with its Attesa collection, and Seiko, with its Astron line of GPS solar watches, offer advanced satellite-based time synchronization and solar charging capabilities for roughly half the price of the new Moser release.

An Offline Smartwatch with High-End Horological DNA

Aesthetically and structurally, the Off-Grid features an analog two-handed dial positioned at the 12 o’clock position, complemented by a subsidiary digital display situated at six o’clock. All operations, adjustments, and modes are seamlessly controlled via four discrete pushers integrated into the flanks of the case. The upper dials retain the classic, unmistakable Moser aesthetic, boasting a gradient fumé finish with either a vibrant red or a sophisticated grey center. Both dial variations are appointed with ceramic lume blocks serving as the hour markers alongside typical Streamliner-style hands.

In a striking departure from the Alpine Mechanics Edition released last year, the Off-Grid refuses to hide its internal architecture. Instead, it puts the specialized D10 movement—developed in a collaborative effort between H. Moser & Cie. and Swiss smartwatch specialist Sequent—directly on display beneath a protective acrylic plate. This transparent element is gracefully framed by an open-worked metal plate that physically secures the analog dial module in place.

Positioned directly below the upper dial is a three-line digital display dedicated to the watch’s extensive array of programmed complications. The sheer breadth of functions is remarkable, providing the wearer with a dual-time GMT function equipped with a country selector covering all global time zones, a split-seconds chronograph with 1/100th-second resolution, a perpetual calendar, a perpetual moon phase indicator that updates hourly and is programmed to remain accurate for an entire century, and precise local sunrise and sunset calculations. Furthermore, the watch includes a vibrating alarm, a practical countdown timer, and the specialized "OFF-GRID" mode featuring quick country selection alongside the aforementioned 10-word dictionary spanning 21 distinct languages.

While a companion smartphone app does exist, its use is strictly intended for rare, occasional setup tasks, such as selecting a time zone with unusual quarter-hour or half-hour offsets. This deliberate design choice places longevity at the absolute forefront. H. Moser & Cie. has engineered the Off-Grid with the explicit intention that it should outlive typical consumer smartwatches, remaining functional and relevant for decades. While the long-term degradation of the internal rechargeable battery over such an extended timeframe remains to be tested, the total lack of app dependency ensures that the Off-Grid will never be rendered obsolete or non-functional should the companion software eventually be discontinued or sunsetted by the manufacturer.

The rechargeable battery itself is safely concealed beneath a solid closed case back, which provides a notably utilitarian view that diverges from the exquisitely decorated sapphire display backs typically expected by collectors of Moser’s mechanical masterworks. Interestingly, the traditional "Swiss Made" label is entirely absent from the watch entirely. This omission is likely a continuation of the brand’s longstanding public campaign to draw critical attention to what it views as a surprisingly low regulatory threshold—just 60 percent of a watch’s value—required to legally achieve the designation.

While that skeptical stance is entirely understandable for the brand’s core mechanical offerings, which are built entirely in-house in Switzerland, entering the unfamiliar territory of smartwatches and electronic modules presents a different challenge. In this new segment, the reassuring presence of a Swiss Made label might have provided collectors with an additional layer of confidence, helping the brand clearly differentiate itself from competitors crowding the modern technology space.
