Ryan Reynolds Expands His Horizons: The Hollywood Star is Taking Horology Classes

Ryan Reynolds has firmly established himself as a modern-day Renaissance man. Already celebrated across the globe as a blockbuster movie star, a remarkably successful billionaire business mogul, and a prominent global soccer magnate through his co-ownership of Wrexham AFC, the Canadian actor may soon add another distinct title to his ever-growing resume: watchmaker.

The multi-hyphenate star recently revealed his latest personal endeavor in a candid social media update. On Sunday, Reynolds took to his official Instagram account to share a personal update with his followers, announcing a surprising new academic pursuit.

“I’m about to start horology class,” the actor shared in an Instagram Story post. “Trying to learn how to take watches apart and back together again. For no reason other than curiosity and a love of this strange mashup of art and engineering.”

Accompanying the text was a striking wrist shot showcasing an exceptional timepiece created by independent watchmaker Bernhard Lederer. The visual offered a glimpse into the sophisticated world of high-end independent watchmaking that has clearly captured the actor’s imagination.

“Staring at this Lederer makes me realize I know nothing, now and forever,” Reynolds wrote, expressing both admiration and humility in the face of master-level horological mechanics.

Inside Bernhard Lederer’s Masterpiece

The timepiece featured on Reynolds’ wrist belongs to the elite realm of independent watchmaking, a sphere dominated by passionate artisans rather than mass-market conglomerates. The watchmaker behind the creation, 67-year-old Bernhard Lederer, holds a long and impressive history in the field. He has been a distinguished and active member of the prestigious Académie Horlogère des Créateurs Indépendants (AHCI) since 1985. Over the past four decades, the German-born watchmaker has dedicated his career to pioneering novel escapements in the relentless pursuit of timekeeping perfection.

The specific watch worn by Reynolds is a masterpiece that Lederer’s eponymous atelier released in 2025: the Lederer CIC 39 InVerto. This sophisticated reference features one of the most advanced escapement architectures in modern watchmaking. What sets it apart immediately is its presentation, putting all of the dizzying mechanical complexity on full display thanks to an inverted caliber.

The 44mm titanium reference is built upon the foundation of Lederer’s acclaimed creation, the Central Impulse Chronometer (CIC). That foundational piece debuted in 2020, instantly turning heads within the collector community by introducing one of the most stable and highly precise manual movements—known as caliber 9012—ever built.

The aptly named InVerto shares the exact same dual-train mechanical architecture and independent double-wheel escapement as the original CIC. However, it distinguishes itself by placing the movement, designated as caliber 9019, directly on the dial side rather than tucking it away beneath a traditional dial plate. Naturally, a timepiece of this caliber is strictly limited by annual production capacity, commanding a retail price of 152,000 Swiss francs, which translates to roughly $187,000 USD.

A Rapidly Evolving Watch Collection

Reynolds’ choice of wristwear demonstrates just how far the actor has traveled within the sophisticated hobby of watch collecting. Not long ago, the Hollywood star’s public appearances typically featured a much more mainstream rotation, alternating predominantly between a classic gold Omega Speedmaster and a practical, everyday Apple Watch.

Over recent years, however, that modest pairing has evolved significantly. Reynolds has increasingly been spotted strapping on a series of extraordinarily complex, highly coveted, and extraordinarily rare timepieces. His evolving wrist rotation has included major heavyweights from the upper echelons of Swiss and German watchmaking, capturing the attention of horological enthusiasts around the world.

Among the notable pieces spotted on his wrist are an intricate Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar, a technically brilliant A. Lange & Söhne Datograph Up/Down Lumen, and an exceptional F.P. Journe Chronomètre à Résonance. Observers have also caught him wearing a rare Rolex Daytona “Paul Newman,” widely considered by connoisseurs to be the ultimate vintage chronograph.

As Reynolds dives further into the intricate rabbit hole of horology—moving from passive collector to active student of the craft—industry watchers and fans alike can expect his wristwear choices, and perhaps his technical understanding, to become even more elaborate.
