Puma Continues Executive Restructuring by Appointing Arne Arens as Chief Commercial Officer

Puma’s ongoing mission to remake and revitalize its executive team has taken another major step forward with its newest high-profile hire. The German athletic apparel and footwear giant announced that it has tapped seasoned industry veteran Arne Arens to serve as its new chief commercial officer, simultaneously adding him as a member of the management board.

The appointment is effective November 15, marking a pivotal moment in Puma’s corporate evolution as the brand seeks to sharpen its competitive edge in the global sporting goods marketplace. Arens steps into the role to permanently fill a crucial leadership vacancy left by Matthias Baeumer, a longtime Puma executive whose departure in September prompted a temporary shuffle within the company’s upper ranks. Following Baeumer’s exit, Chief Executive Officer Arthur Hoeld assumed the chief commercial officer responsibilities on an interim basis while the brand conducted an exhaustive search for a permanent successor.

With Arens now joining the leadership team, Puma’s reconstituted management board consists of CEO Arthur Hoeld, Chief Commercial Officer Arne Arens, Chief Financial Officer Mark Langer, Chief Brand Officer Maria Valdes, and Chief Operating Officer Andreas Hubert. This streamlined and experienced board is tasked with steering the company through a challenging global retail environment and executing Puma’s long-term strategic growth initiatives.

A Comprehensive Global Mandate

According to details shared by Puma regarding the newly created scope of the position, Arens will assume full responsibility for the company’s global commercial organization and overarching marketplace strategy. In this sweeping capacity, he will oversee sales activities across all retail channels and key markets worldwide, ensuring that Puma’s commercial execution remains tightly aligned with its broader corporate goals.

The appointment comes at a critical juncture for the Herzogenaurach-headquartered brand, which has made no secret of its lofty ambitions to capture a larger share of the athletic footwear and apparel market. Puma has consistently stated its objective to cement its status as one of the top three global sports brands in the world, a goal that requires robust commercial execution, deeply integrated wholesale partnerships, and an acute understanding of shifting consumer preferences across diverse international territories.

Arthur Hoeld expressed high confidence in the incoming executive, pointing to Arens’ impressive professional background as a primary driver for the hire. In an official statement addressing the appointment, Hoeld emphasized that Arens possesses a rare and unique skillset that seamlessly bridges the gap between commercial expertise, sharp consumer insights, and visionary brand leadership.

"He has a proven track record in building brands and working with wholesale partners to drive commercial execution, while staying on top of what consumers expect," Hoeld noted in his statement. He further highlighted that Arens’ extensive international experience, combined with his proven leadership capabilities and genuine passion for sport, makes him the ideal addition to the Puma executive team at a time when the company is aggressively executing its strategic roadmap.

A Deep Industry Pedigree

Arens brings to Puma a wealth of leadership experience garnered over decades of working with some of the most recognizable and influential names in the global apparel, footwear, and sporting goods sectors. His appointment represents the culmination of a distinguished career spent scaling brands, managing vast international operations, and navigating complex wholesale and retail landscapes.

Most recently, Arens served as the chief executive officer of apparel technology company Unspun, a tenure that lasted for eight months. Prior to leading Unspun, Arens held the top executive post at Boardriders, the parent company of iconic action sports and lifestyle brands Quiksilver and Billabong. During his nearly three-year run at the helm of Boardriders, he was responsible for steering the global enterprise through a dynamic period of retail transformation and brand repositioning.

Before his executive leadership roles at Boardriders and Unspun, Arens spent more than a decade building his reputation at outdoor apparel titan The North Face. During his extensive tenure with the VF Corporation-owned brand, he held several high-level positions of increasing responsibility, including global brand president, general manager of Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), and vice president of sales for the EMEA region. His deep familiarity with the nuances of international markets, particularly within Europe, positions him exceptionally well to oversee Puma’s sprawling global commercial footprint.

Arens’ foundational industry experience also includes nearly eight years spent at athletic behemoth Nike. During his tenure with the Swoosh, he held influential positions such as sales director of sportswear and general manager of football for the critical German, Austria, and Switzerland region, commonly referred to in the industry as the DACH market. This extensive background across Nike, The North Face, Boardriders, and Unspun provides Arens with a comprehensive, multi-faceted understanding of both the performance athletic and lifestyle apparel markets.

Expressing his enthusiasm for his new chapter, Arens noted the unique and enviable position that Puma currently occupies within the global marketplace.

"With its great heritage and a brand known across the globe, Puma holds a unique position in the sporting goods industry and has a tremendous opportunity in the global market," Arens said. He added that he eagerly looks forward to collaborating closely with Puma’s internal teams and external retail partners to unlock these latent opportunities and build deeper, more meaningful connections with consumers around the world.

A Wider Wave of Executive Changes

The addition of Arne Arens to the management board is part of a much broader, highly calculated wave of executive changes and strategic realignments that have swept through Puma over recent months. The company has been actively reshaping its leadership structure across multiple regions and operational departments to optimize its organizational efficiency and respond more swiftly to regional market demands.

Earlier in September, Puma announced key leadership appointments in Europe to bolster its regional management capabilities. The company named Fokko de Rooij as its new managing director of Europe, while simultaneously appointing Daniel Pustina to the role of managing director of Cluster Central, signaling a renewed focus on strengthening the brand’s core European stronghold through localized leadership and targeted retail strategies.

However, the period of transition has not been without notable departures. Earlier that same month, Puma witnessed the exit of Tara McRae, who had made history as the company’s first female North American president. McRae departed the athletic firm to take on a prominent new executive marketing role at competitor Skechers, leaving a high-profile vacancy in the crucial North American market that Puma continues to navigate.

As Puma prepares to welcome Arne Arens to its executive ranks on November 15, the brand’s leadership team is clearly betting that his decades of operational expertise and global brand-building acumen will provide the stability and commercial momentum needed to drive the company forward. With a newly solidified management board and a clear mandate to expand its market share, Puma is positioning itself to tackle the challenges of the global sporting goods industry head-on.
