For couples planning a wedding, choosing the right venue is often the most pivotal decision in the entire design process. It sets the tone, dictates the color palette, and establishes the overarching atmosphere for the guests. For Kim, however, that choice was remarkably straightforward from the very beginning. Long before the engagement ring was even discussed, The Willard stood out as her absolute favorite hotel. When the time finally came to plan their wedding day, the historic Washington, D.C., landmark was the only logical setting for a celebration centered around elegance, history, and romance.
Kim and Frank’s journey to the altar had been grounded in the same effortless authenticity that defined their relationship. Eschewing grand, over-the-top gestures or elaborate public productions, the couple kept their engagement entirely unpretentious. Frank proposed over a quiet, intimate dinner at a local restaurant, creating a moment that was, in Kim’s words, "simple, easy, very us." That same understated grace would ultimately guide the aesthetic and execution of their wedding day, blending high-end historical grandeur with deeply personal touches.
The Planning: Design, Vibe, and Vision
When translating their vision into reality, Kim aimed for a distinct mood that felt simultaneously rooted in the past and breathtakingly romantic. She envisioned a celebration that felt distinctly "old money," drawing aesthetic inspiration from the gilded age and what she affectionately described as "Titanic chic." The overarching goal was to avoid trendy gimmicks in favor of intentional details, an elegant atmosphere, and a warm, welcoming feel that would envelop every guest who walked through the doors.
This vision found its ultimate expression inside the hotel’s magnificent Willard Room. Featuring striking marble columns, rich and warm wood paneling, and historic architectural details, the room already possessed an innate sense of intimacy and grandeur. Rather than fighting the space, Kim and Frank leaned heavily into its natural architecture. They enhanced the room’s inherent warmth by introducing an abundance of flickering candlelight, delicate glassware accented with subtle golden tones, and plush velvet linens that added a tactile layer of sophistication.
The floral design further elevated the space, featuring arrangements in soft shades of white and cream, complemented by gentle touches of green and muted pinks. Rather than remaining confined to traditional centerpieces, these lush florals spilled dramatically down the edges of the bar and the head table, creating an organic yet deeply luxurious environment that transported guests to a bygone era of classic American elegance.
The Fashion
The timeless, classic aesthetic extended naturally into the wedding party’s wardrobe, starting with the bride. Kim discovered her dream gown at the Bridal Room in McLean, Virginia, selecting a stunning creation by designer Kelly Faetanini. The dress was a sleek, sophisticated fit-to-flare silhouette that hugged her figure before cascading down into a dramatic train. Key design details, including exposed structural bonding and a continuous line of delicate buttons running all the way down the back of the train, added architectural interest and a subtle nod to vintage tailoring.
To complement the bride’s look and reinforce the overarching design scheme, the bridal party embraced a sharp, high-contrast color palette. Leaning directly into a sophisticated black-and-white theme, Kim’s bridesmaids wore floor-length black gowns sourced from BHLDN. The sleek, uniform dark attire of the bridal party created a striking visual contrast against the warm, golden tones of the venue and the bride’s ivory gown, anchoring the vintage-inspired aesthetic with modern polish.
The Details
As the evening progressed, the focus shifted to a culinary experience designed to match the elegance of the surroundings. The multi-course dinner service began with a traditional, impeccably plated wedge salad, offering a crisp and refreshing start to the meal. For the main course, guests were given a choice between two meticulously prepared entrées: an oven-roasted, herb-crusted chicken or a rich, pepper-crusted filet mignon.
Following dinner, the celebration transitioned into a lively dessert hour tailored for guests with a sweet tooth. The centerpiece of the dessert offerings was an impressive four-tier wedding cake. Guests were given a choice of two decadent flavor profiles: classic vanilla cake layered with rich chocolate ganache and chocolate buttercream, or a deeply indulgent chocolate cake paired with dark chocolate ganache and chocolate buttercream. In addition to the cake, an interactive ice cream bar allowed guests to customize their sweet treats.
The beverage menu was equally curated, featuring a selection of signature cocktails designed to complement the vintage vibe of the evening. Bartenders served up classic espresso martinis and old-fashioneds, while a refreshing Shirley Temple was offered as a thoughtfully crafted mocktail option for non-drinking guests.
Throughout the night, as candlelight reflected off the gold-accented glassware and the historical room buzzed with conversation and laughter, Kim and Frank’s wedding stood as a testament to the power of a clear vision. By honoring the historic charm of their favorite venue and pairing it with intentional, classic details, the couple created a celebration that felt both timeless and entirely their own.
