Conceived not as a wholesale replacement for the brand’s foundational identity or its core internal studio team, the newly established residency is structured as a long-term platform. Under this framework, Bullen is tasked with interpreting the brand’s established codes—originally implemented and defined by visionary founder Samuel Ross—and translating them through a renewed aesthetic lens. This appointment signals a deliberate evolution for A-Cold-Wall, blending its industrial, brutalist heritage with the extensive luxury and technical outerwear expertise that Bullen has accumulated over a distinguished career spanning major global fashion houses.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the role, Bullen emphasized the cultural weight and collaborative spirit of the brand as it steps into its next era. “It is a privilege to be working with A Cold Wall and sharing my experiences with those of the brand,” Bullen said upon the announcement of his appointment. “A Cold Wall represents to me: community, culture, lifestyle, but most importantly good design. Bringing together friends and enjoying creativity to take ACW into its next chapter.”
The appointment brings to the forefront a designer with a formidable track record in senior creative roles across some of the most influential names in contemporary menswear and luxury fashion. Bullen spent more than a decade as the head of design at Stone Island, a brand renowned for its technical fabric innovation and utilitarian aesthetic. Following his tenure there, he transitioned to Givenchy, where he served as the design director of menswear, navigating the intersection of classic French haute couture and modern streetwear influences.
An alumnus of the prestigious Central Saint Martins, where he graduated with a degree in menswear in 2011, Bullen’s career trajectory has continuously expanded across diverse categories of the fashion business. In his most recent role as design and studio director at Kenzo, which he held until 2025, he oversaw an expansive portfolio that included menswear and womenswear ready-to-wear collections, shoes, leather goods, and children’s ranges. Following the conclusion of his tenure at Kenzo, Bullen returned to his roots at the King’s Cross-based fashion institution to share his industry insights as a guest tutor, further cementing his reputation as a mentor and thought leader within the contemporary design community.
Ben Banks, chief executive officer of Four Marketing Group, hailed Bullen’s appointment as a deeply natural partnership, noting that the decision is rooted in a professional relationship and mutual trust built over many years of collaboration within the industry. “A meaningful and long-term design and cultural philosophy is built on trust and patience, and that trust already exists between us, so we start from a strong foundation,” Banks said. He added that the broader fashion industry is currently navigating a uniquely challenging economic and cultural moment, but argued that such periods of systemic change ultimately offer a valuable opportunity to learn from the past and shape a bold new vision for the future.
The leadership transition comes at a time of structural evolution for Four Marketing. Founded in 1997, the company has established a powerful reputation for building, scaling, and managing businesses for globally recognized brands, including historical ties to Stone Island and C.P. Company. Operating across a diverse ecosystem that encompasses traditional retail, e-commerce platforms, wholesale distribution, and licensing agreements, Four Marketing expanded its proprietary brand portfolio when it acquired A-Cold-Wall from the fashion wholesaler Tomorrow in 2024.
Meanwhile, the brand’s original founder, Samuel Ross, has transitioned away from any ongoing involvement with the label he established. Since his departure, Ross has continued to direct his creative energies through his multidisciplinary design studio SR_A, alongside high-profile, multiyear creative partnerships with major commercial entities such as Zara and Whoop. As Four Marketing prepares for Joshua A. Bullen’s debut collection in Paris for fall 2027, the fashion industry watches closely to see how this carefully curated residency will bridge the gap between A-Cold-Wall’s industrial origins and its next generation of design leadership.
