Amazon Streamlines TV Shopping With New Prime Video Integration and ‘Shop the Scene’ Technology

Amazon is significantly blurring the line between watching television and online retail by rolling out a series of major new features designed to make shopping directly from Prime Video titles much easier. The retail and streaming giant announced Thursday that it is expanding its e-commerce capabilities across thousands of movies, TV shows, and live sports events. By deeply integrating its existing X-Ray information hub and deploying its advanced visual search technology, Amazon is creating a more prominent and accessible pathway for viewers to discover and purchase items inspired by what is on their screens.

The newly introduced updates build directly upon the foundation laid last year with the debut of "Shop the Show," a second-screen shopping experience previously accessible through the Amazon mobile shopping app. When that feature first launched, it required users to actively interrupt their viewing experience or manually type the phrase "shop the show" into the Amazon Search app on their mobile devices to find products tied to a specific movie, television series, or live sports broadcast. While innovative, that initial iteration proved easy for casual viewers to miss, prompting the company to rethink how product recommendations are surfaced and integrated into the broader entertainment ecosystem.

These newly announced features aim to eliminate that friction by making product recommendations far more prominent and intuitive to access, reflecting a broader industry-wide push. Amazon is far from alone in its pursuit of shoppable entertainment, as major media and technology companies increasingly look for ways to integrate shopping suggestions directly into the viewing experience to establish lucrative new streams of revenue. Over the past few years, platforms across the digital landscape have experimented with similar concepts to capture consumer attention at the exact moment of inspiration.

YouTube has long offered content creators a dedicated merchandise shelf alongside its pioneering of shoppable connected TV advertisements. Peacock introduced a feature known as Must ShopTV, which allows viewers to purchase products that appear naturally within its streamed content. Roku has similarly introduced functionality enabling users to buy products directly from Shopify merchants using nothing more than their television remote controls. Meanwhile, media conglomerate Disney has actively experimented with shoppable television formats, incorporating interactive e-commerce and virtual concessions into streaming ads across Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN.

Amazon makes it easier to buy what you see on Prime Video

Under Amazon’s updated ecosystem, accessing these shopping features on Fire TV devices has been streamlined through the platform’s established X-Ray experience. Viewers can launch X-Ray in the traditional manner by pressing the up button on their Fire TV remote while content is playing. From there, users can navigate to a newly added Shop tab that highlights various products related directly to the scene or title currently on screen. To complete a purchase, viewers can then open the Amazon Shopping app on their mobile device, which intelligently recognizes what is playing on the television and automatically drops the user into a synchronized feed tailored specifically to that exact moment in the narrative, allowing them to browse and buy preferred items seamlessly.

The companion second-screen experience outside of the X-Ray environment has also received substantial performance and usability upgrades. Instead of forcing users to manually type a specific search request into their phones, viewers can simply open the Amazon Shopping app while watching a supported movie or show and be immediately directed to a dedicated storefront for that specific title.

Once inside the app’s title-specific feed, users can tap on imagery from the show to activate Amazon’s sophisticated visual search technology, known as Amazon Lens. This tool is designed to identify and surface products inspired by the on-screen character outfits, home decor, furniture, and various other objects appearing within the scene. This particular offering, branded as "Shop the Scene," acknowledges the practical realities of television wardrobe and set design by not always guaranteeing an exact match for every item. Television characters frequently wear clothing or utilize props that are not stocked by Amazon or its third-party marketplace sellers, including pieces sourced from high-end luxury fashion houses or custom-made theatrical costumes. Nevertheless, the technology serves as an effective jumping-off point, helping consumers discover alternative products that can help them achieve a similar aesthetic or decorative style in their own lives.

The "Shop the Scene" technology is rolling out to users on iOS and Android devices in the United States, supporting more than 600 initial titles at launch. Concurrently, the broader "Shop the Show" feature within the Amazon mobile application is experiencing a massive content expansion. The capability is scaling up from supporting roughly 1,300 titles to encompassing more than 8,000 titles across the United States. According to the company, this expanded catalog covers Amazon Prime Originals, a curated selection of licensed fan-favorite movies and television series, and live sports programming.
