There are a few foundational elements that instantly epitomize the spirit of British fashion. Burberry is unquestionably one of them, and according to creative director Daniel Lee, legendary textile designer Cecilia Birtwell is another.
Birtwell boasts a long, enduring, and deeply influential legacy within the English textile and design industry. She stands as one of the definitive visual architects of the UK fashion scene during the turbulent, creative eras of the 1960s and 1970s. Now, for a presentation that easily maintained its status as the hottest ticket of London Fashion Week, Daniel Lee tapped Birtwell to collaborate directly on a vibrant, unexpected series of prints for his Spring/Summer 2027 collection for Burberry.
At first glance through the crowded photo pit and front-row chatter, an observer might have assumed that Central Cee’s surprise runway debut was the absolute most exciting development of the afternoon—and for plenty of attendees and culture watchers, it certainly was. But for fashion traditionalists and those who share a deep-seated taste for sartorial nostalgia, Birtwell’s whimsical, happy-face prints interspersed throughout the line surely gave the celebrity appearance a run for its money.
Burberry is a house universally and famously defined by its checks and its heavy-duty weather-resistant trench coats. Yet, for the upcoming spring season, Lee cleverly utilized these signature silhouettes merely as launch pads for much larger, more expansive creative ideas. The runway presentation was spawning with vivid floral motifs and intricate three-dimensional applications that completely transformed expectations of the brand. There were glistening sequin buttercups cascading across featherlight, diaphanous midi skirts, sleek silver metal studs carefully forming delicate vines across rugged leather coats, and meticulously hand-embroidered blueberry bushes adorning outerwear.
The collection further introduced dainty little dresses and sharply tailored preppy shirts emblazoned with tiny, charming violets printed onto the fabric. Alongside these pieces, structured taffeta trench coats appeared with dramatic puffed hems and tiny, white fluffy flowers embroidered directly into the puckering material. After a couple of seasons defined heavily by traditional trenches and predictable checks, Lee intentionally invited a well-received, much-needed sense of lightness and whimsy back into the broader Burberry universe.
When it comes to the house’s signature checks, however, there was still no shortage of the classic pattern on display. Lacquered vinyl coats featured completely hand-drawn checks designed by Birtwell, appearing crisp and clean against a stark white backdrop. Meanwhile, traditional trench coats were reimagined in ultra-lightweight taffeta, technical nylon, and later sheer organza, perfectly tailored for a breezy spring evening feel.
One of Daniel Lee’s greatest and most defining design traits is his exceptional knack for injecting a modern, sophisticated youthfulness into a deeply storied fashion house. This specific skill is, after all, what ultimately made him so remarkably successful during his tenure at Bottega Veneta, and what better high-stakes challenge could there be than translating that magic to a heritage giant like Burberry?
Even so, the Spring/Summer 2027 show featured an extra layer of bold playfulness and eccentric charm that fashion audiences haven’t quite seen from Lee quite this vividly before. The runway showcased striking sunset-pink dresses thoughtfully paired with contrasting striped long-sleeved undershirts, as well as fabulous, happy-face embellished shoes worn purposefully with scrunched socks, giving the entire lineup a delightfully eccentric feel. Whether one chooses to call it the Birtwell effect or Lee’s evolving vision, this bright, kooky collection successfully delivered traditional florals for spring, but executed with an entirely new and infectious energy.
