Jodie Sweetin Opens Up About Her Journey Through Addiction, Financial Hardship, and Ultimate Resilience

Jodie Sweetin has offered a deeply candid look into her past struggles with drug addiction, detailing a time in her life when financial devastation forced her into a small one-bedroom apartment with her two young daughters and left her with less than $200 in her bank account. The 44-year-old actress, widely recognized and beloved for her iconic portrayal of Stephanie Tanner on the legendary ABC sitcom Full House from 1987 to 1995, weathered a profoundly difficult period before the beloved program received its successful Netflix reboot in 2016 under the title Fuller House.

The challenges she faced were uniquely complex as she navigated single motherhood with her two daughters, Zoie, now 18, and Beatrix, now 16, whom she shares with her ex-husbands, Cody Herpin and Morty Coyle, respectively. Sweetin opened up about this grueling chapter of her life during a recent appearance on actress Natanya Ross’s podcast, We’re Still Here, Babe. During the interview, she explained that the financial earnings from her iconic childhood sitcom largely went toward funding her treatment before she ultimately achieved sobriety in 2011.

Reflecting on the stark reality of financial insecurity, Sweetin shared a humbling anecdote about shopping at a retail store. ‘[It’s] not like I was ever a materialistic person, but you learn humility when you are at Target and you got to turn around and go put some shit back ’cause you don’t have the money on your debit card,’ she explained candidly. To make ends meet and provide for her family during her recovery, Sweetin took on a role as a director of operations while still in treatment, working to secure extra income and maintain stability.

She spoke positively about the grounding experience of working outside the entertainment industry during her recovery. ‘I was happy. And I think part of the reason that I was able to come back into the business and enjoy it truly is that I had gone completely in the other direction. I was just working a normal job,’ Sweetin noted.

The actress elaborated on the realities of raising her children while living in a cramped one-and-a-half-bedroom apartment. Bringing in roughly $2,200 a month, she relied on the generosity of her parents, who stepped in to cover the remaining half of her rent. ‘I was just trying to get by. [I] drove an old used car,’ she said. Addressing any outside judgment about her career shift, Sweetin added that she possessed zero ego regarding her employment status. ‘I didn’t have an ego about it. I didn’t care that I was "working a normal job." I think other people, again, were like, "What are you doing here?" And I was like, "I’m paying my bills… Kids don’t pay for themselves."’

According to the actress, those rigorous years taught her valuable lessons about finding contentment regardless of external circumstances. She adopted a mindset centered on remaining fully present, embracing a philosophy of blooming wherever she was planted.

That trajectory shifted significantly when the Netflix spin-off Fuller House began streaming in 2016. However, even with the return of the popular series, achieving immediate financial stability did not happen overnight. Sweetin recalled needing to borrow money during her very first week of filming the revival, ultimately skating into her inaugural paycheck with approximately $190 left in her bank account. She noted that none of her colleagues were aware of her financial strain at the time, though she was entirely at peace with her situation.

Looking back, Sweetin recognizes that these turbulent experiences granted her a resilient perspective on life. Having tasted both incredible success and complete financial depletion, she understands the importance of keeping her ego in check. Fuller House went on to enjoy a successful five-season run, streaming from 2016 to 2020 and connecting with a new generation of viewers while satisfying nostalgic fans.

This appearance is part of a broader openness Sweetin has shown regarding her historical struggles with substance abuse. In July 2025, she discussed her battle with addiction during an appearance on Teen Mom star Kailyn Lowry’s podcast, Barely Famous. During that conversation, she openly acknowledged her past abuse of substances including cocaine, crystal meth, and ecstasy.

Sweetin clarified that while her addiction issues did not manifest during her original run on Full House as a child star, the subject became an inescapable talking point when she reached her twenties. Because of her early public profile, her personal struggles remained permanently fixed in the public eye. She pointed out that while millions of people grapple with addiction worldwide, her fame magnified her experiences, turning private pain into sensationalized headlines.

‘I always say, I would have struggled with addiction issues regardless of being on TV or not,’ she remarked during the podcast. ‘And to be fair, that gave me some of the ability to be able to find treatment and find help in ways that I might not have had I not worked as a child. But it’s very hard [when] you have to make all your mistakes publicly.’

Today, Sweetin’s life looks markedly different. She has been happily married to clinical social worker Mescal Wasilewski since 2022, building a stable partnership and continuing to maintain a steady presence in the entertainment industry. Earlier this year, she showcased her versatility and enduring pop-culture footprint by competing in the HGTV series Totally 90s House, where she teamed up with fellow 90s icons Brian Austin Green from Beverly Hills, 90210 and Beverley Mitchell from 7th Heaven. Through all the highs and lows, Sweetin continues to embrace her journey with humility, grace, and an unwavering commitment to personal growth.
