PSV Survives Late Porto Onslaught to Claim Crucial First Champions League Win

October 20, 2026

PSV Eindhoven withstood a furious second-half onslaught in Portugal to secure a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Porto, marking their first win of the current UEFA Champions League group stage campaign.

Guus Til proved to be the decisive figure on the night, netting the only goal of the game in the 57th minute after capitalizing on a swift attacking sequence. The breakthrough arrived when Esmir Bajraktarevic unleashed a powerful strike that reverberated off the post, allowing Sven Mijnans to expertly steer the rebound back across the face of goal for Til to tap in from close range.

The Dutch visitors were well worth their narrow advantage after controlling the tempo and dominating possession during the opening period. Francesco Farioli’s Porto side struggled to find their rhythm in the first half, offering very little threat to PSV goalkeeper Matej Kovar and failing to properly test Diogo Costa at the opposite end of the pitch.

Building on their territorial dominance, PSV very nearly doubled their advantage early in the second half. Til continued to find pockets of space in the attacking third, going agonizingly close with a header shortly after the interval before finally breaking the deadlock moments later.

However, the complexion of the match shifted dramatically after the hour mark. As Porto poured forward in waves in search of an equalizer, the game transformed into a desperate defensive rearguard action for the visitors. The mounting pressure appeared to rattle the PSV defense, aided by an increasingly fragile performance from goalkeeper Kovar.

The Czech shot-stopper nearly unraveled in the 72nd minute when a weak clearance placed his defenders in immediate jeopardy. Kovar managed to somewhat redeem himself moments later by bravely blocking a fierce shot from Victor Froholdt with his chest, before defender Lutsarel Geertruida intervened brilliantly to block the follow-up attempt from Pepê.

The defensive scares did not stop there for the Dutch side. Just a minute later, Kovar found himself completely stranded after rushing far out of his penalty area in an attempt to cut out a Porto attack. Only quick thinking and desperate defending saved PSV from conceding, as Sergiño Dest raced back to hack the ball clear just before Alberto Costa could poke it into the unguarded net.

Despite being pinned back for long stretches of the half, PSV still managed to carry a threat on the counter-attack. Substitute Denis Man nearly stamped his mark on the game immediately after coming off the bench, coming within inches of securing a second goal for the visitors when his curling effort beat Costa in the Porto goal but ultimately failed to sneak inside the post.

The nervy 1-0 victory provides a massive boost for PSV, lifting them to a provisional 16th place in the newly formatted Champions League table at the halfway stage of the third round of fixtures. For Porto, the defeat leaves the Portuguese giants still searching for their first point of the European campaign.

Looking ahead, PSV will turn their attention back to home comforts as they prepare for their next fixture. The Eindhoven club will welcome Belgian side Club Brugge to the Philips Stadion on November 4, when the visitors make the short trip across the border for the next round of European action.
