US Ambassador to the Netherlands Joe Popolo Donated $1 Million to Trump’s White House Ballroom Project, Leaked Documents Show

The United States ambassador to the Netherlands, Joe Popolo, contributed $1 million toward President Donald Trump’s ambitious and controversial new White House ballroom project, according to a newly leaked list of project donors.

The financial contribution, which came to light through investigative reporting by The Washington Post, was made late last year, arriving approximately two months after the Texas-born businessman and executive was officially appointed to his diplomatic post in The Hague. When approached for comment regarding the $1 million donation, Ambassador Popolo declined to provide further details to the newspaper.

The leaked document, which tracks contributions made up through the end of September, details a total of 67 individual donations of $10,000 or more. Combined, these pledges amount to a staggering $333 million raised for the massive architectural undertaking. An analysis of the donor registry indicates that corporations and executives hailing from the technology, artificial intelligence, and defense manufacturing sectors account for a substantial share of the overall financial backing. Furthermore, a portion of the contributors chose to remain anonymous, collectively accounting for $77 million of the total funds raised.

According to reporting by The Washington Post, approximately half of the total monetary contributions originated from corporate entities or private individuals who currently have active business interests, pending regulatory reviews, or other official matters before the federal government. This overlap has previously drawn sharp scrutiny from political observers and lawmakers. In earlier months, Democratic politicians had formally requested access to the project’s donor list through official channels, but those inquiries were repeatedly rebuffed, leaving the identities of the financial backers hidden from public view until the recent leak.

The special fund established to manage the project’s finances had previously reached an agreement with the government ensuring that the identities of its financial backers would not be publicly disclosed. Under standard legal frameworks in the United States, non-profit entities of this nature are generally not legally mandated to publish their donor rolls, shielding the contributors from mandatory public transparency.

When the grand architectural plans for the ballroom were first unveiled last year, President Trump asserted publicly that the entire construction effort would be funded entirely by himself and a select group of wealthy friends, assuring the public that no taxpayer money would be utilized. However, the newly leaked donor registry reveals no recorded financial contribution from the president himself.

This discrepancy echoes earlier investigative findings published by The Washington Post earlier this year, which reported that roughly half of the total construction costs—currently estimated to have ballooned to $600 million—are actually being covered by public funds rather than private philanthropy alone.

The White House has consistently rebuffed the mounting criticism surrounding the project’s financing structure and soaring price tag. Administration officials brushed off the latest revelations, arguing that critics of the initiative would inevitably voice complaints regardless of how the renovations were funded, maintaining that critics would express equal dissatisfaction if the burden fell entirely upon taxpayers.

The massive new ballroom, which President Trump has stated will possess the capacity to comfortably accommodate nearly 1,000 guests at official functions and gatherings, is currently being constructed on the historical footprint of the White House East Wing. The historic wing was completely demolished last year under the president’s orders to make way for the new structure. Detailed blueprints and plans for the ongoing construction project also indicate the inclusion of a heavily reinforced military bunker situated directly underneath the new entertainment hall.
