Transforming Bahrain Bay: Inside Architect Mohamed Alqari’s Fluid, Art-Filled Waterfront Sanctuary

A vacation home overlooking the water inherently carries promises of tranquility, relaxation, and escape from the frantic pace of daily life. Yet, for architect and interior designer Mohamed Alqari, the breathtaking panoramic view of the water from a high-rise residence at the prestigious Four Seasons Private Residences at Bahrain Bay served merely as a blank canvas and a starting point.

The apartment already possessed a sleek, contemporary architectural shell designed by the world-renowned architecture firm Gensler. It featured impeccably clean lines, neutral architectural finishes, and an expansive open layout ready for a visionary touch. However, Alqari’s primary challenge was distinct: he needed to transform a pristine, newly constructed residential unit that felt as though it was perpetually awaiting its very first guest into a deeply personal, soulful retreat—a sanctuary the owner could not wait to return to time and time again.

Spanning 1,937 square feet, the sophisticated residence is utilized primarily as a private vacation home and an occasional base during the owner’s visits to Manama, the capital of Bahrain. Rather than relying on tired coastal clichés, predictable nautical tropes, or literal beachside decor, Alqari, who serves as the founder of Qreative Design, chose to interpret the natural beauty of the surrounding environment through color, materiality, and organic form. He drew profound visual and atmospheric cues directly from the shimmering sea, the brilliant local sunlight, the soft texture of sand, and the endless horizon visible from the building’s sweeping windows.

"The project interprets the colors and atmosphere of the sea, sunlight, sand, and horizon through materiality, artwork, and form," Alqari explains, summarizing the conceptual foundation that guides every corner of the residence.

To counterbalance the rigorous, straight lines and architectural geometry established by Gensler’s original building shell, Alqari introduced an intentional motif of curves inspired by the gentle, continuous movement of ocean waves. This fluid design language manifests throughout the apartment in rounded seating arrangements, elegantly curved custom mirrors, and organically shaped area rugs that visually soften the harder edges of the rooms.

A prime example of this philosophy is the striking Matera dining table, expertly designed by Sebastiano Tosi for Mogg. Taking its sculptural form directly from water-smoothed pebbles found along a shoreline, the table powerfully reinforces the home’s overarching theme of fluid motion. These curving shapes are thoughtfully repeated in various scales throughout the apartment, carefully avoiding a monotonous look that might make every piece feel as though it belongs to the exact same mass-produced furniture set. Instead, these elements lend the open-plan living and dining spaces a relaxed, welcoming ambiance, subtly layered with moments of high design, subtle drama, understated glamour, and rich artistic character.

The material palette plays an equally vital role in establishing the home’s unique atmosphere. Alqari curated a sophisticated combination of natural and tactile elements designed to foster an immediate sense of warmth, depth, and understated luxury. Rich walnut paneling and custom joinery throughout the residence provide a warm, textural backdrop that beautifully contrasts with the contemporary furniture selections and gallery-quality art pieces. Meanwhile, creamy whites and sandy beiges keep the interior rooms feeling airy, luminous, and light-filled. Touches of vibrant turquoise, deep oceanic blue, lush forest green, and sunny yellow are introduced selectively through individual statement pieces rather than overwhelming entire walls, successfully capturing the rich hues of a beachfront setting while leaving ample breathing room for the curated artworks and the impressive urban and coastal views outside.

Those artworks occupy a central position in defining the home’s distinct personality and cultural grounding. Sculptures created by prominent Bahraini artist Jamal Al Yousif introduce tactile presence and striking, thought-provoking silhouettes to the main living area. Nearby, Martin Berger’s evocative contemporary painting Flow commands attention from its place on the gallery-like wall. The furniture selection is similarly international and eclectic, featuring iconic, original 1970s Wassily chairs sourced via 1stDibs alongside a sculptural Lemni chair. These vintage and collectible pieces sit comfortably among bespoke furnishings crafted locally by artisans in Bahrain, as well as imported design objects sourced from Italy, France, India, Indonesia, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Morocco.

Adding to the home’s sense of discovery, Alqari incorporated a striking sculptural floor lamp designed by James Haywood, which the architect personally discovered during Paris Design Week. This collectible-driven, highly curated approach grants the apartment a quality that a brand-new residential build simply cannot achieve on its own: an authentic sense of narrative depth and personal discovery.

Working within the single-level layout, Alqari maintained an open-concept floor plan where the main living, dining, and kitchen areas seamlessly connect to one another while maintaining uninterrupted visual access to the waterfront views. Circulation through the apartment was intentionally planned to mimic a professional art gallery, providing the displayed artwork and sculptural furniture with the necessary physical space to be fully appreciated as the owner moves through the home. In addition to these primary social zones, the 1,937-square-foot residence accommodates a generous primary suite complete with a dedicated dressing room and a luxurious en-suite bathroom, a comfortable guest bedroom, a private nanny suite, a powder room, and an expansive balcony extending off the main living areas for outdoor relaxation.

Because the project involved working entirely within an existing architectural shell, much of the interior transformation relied heavily on meticulous individual choices, ranging from the grain and placement of the walnut wall paneling to the precise scale and positioning of every single sculptural object. The comprehensive project took approximately a year and a half from initial design concepts to final completion, with the design phase launching while the high-rise building itself was still undergoing its final construction finishes.

Reflecting on his overarching philosophy for the space, Alqari notes that good design should provoke an emotional response and feel genuinely inviting rather than adhering to an overly rigid or purely minimal aesthetic.

Within this Bahrain Bay residence, the surrounding sea makes its presence felt indoors through a graceful curve, a warm texture, or a deliberate note of deep blue. Yet, thanks to its thoughtfully curated art collection and bespoke furnishings, the apartment refuses to belong entirely to either the coast or the city, standing instead as a distinctive residential work of art entirely its own.
