Nicolas Cage Reveals He Is ‘Currently Homeless’ After Massive Malibu Sinkhole Devastates His $10.5 Million Mansion

Academy Award-winning actor Nicolas Cage has revealed that he is temporarily without a permanent home following a natural disaster that severely damaged his multi-million-dollar property in Southern California. The 62-year-old actor opened up about his unexpected living situation during a weekend appearance at Los Angeles Comic Con, sharing details of the ongoing property crisis with fans and attendees.

The conversation regarding his housing status began when the acclaimed star was asked about his upcoming Halloween plans. Rather than discussing festive decorations or costume ideas, Cage candidly admitted to the audience that he is "currently a little bit homeless."

Explaining the abrupt shift in his living arrangements, the star of such cinematic hits as Face/Off, The Rock, and Madden explained that "something happened to my house in Malibu so I’m just sort of living in hotels."

The disruption stems from an incident in September, when a massive sinkhole opened up directly in front of his $10.5 million Malibu residence, completely swallowing the property’s driveway and plunging portions of the beachfront estate into a state of structural hazard.

According to reports from the scene, a combination of relentless coastal erosion and severe storms battered the coastline, causing sections of the oceanfront property to give way. Images captured in the aftermath showed a gaping chasm where the driveway once stood, with cracked and fractured slabs of asphalt and concrete having collapsed deep into the earth. The initial 30-foot-by-30-foot void ultimately expanded over the following weeks, stretching toward the side of the home and encroaching upon the front entrance.

The geological emergency quickly escalated beyond an individual property issue, impacting the entire neighborhood. Local authorities and emergency responders were forced to act swiftly to secure the area. Firefighters initially discovered the catastrophic property damage in early September after responding to a suspected gas main break. Upon arrival, emergency personnel found that the sinkhole had not only devoured the driveway but had also claimed a security fence, a portable restroom, and a substantial portion of the adjacent roadway.

In the wake of the expanding hazard, Malibu officials took immediate action to protect residents and emergency workers. Neighbors living in close proximity to the actor’s home were evacuated as local authorities deemed the surrounding conditions dangerously unstable. Municipal reports indicated that a total of seven homes on the same street were officially declared unsafe for occupancy. Furthermore, officials red-tagged an additional 24 houses in the broader vicinity, restricting vehicle access due to compromised roadways.

Malibu city officials emphasized the severity of the situation in updates published on the city’s official website, noting that the disaster resulted in a critical "loss of access for Fire and Sheriff’s personnel to respond to medical, fire or law enforcement emergencies." The collapse of the beachfront driveway had effectively sealed off the thoroughfare, blocking both resident mobility and emergency vehicle deployment.

Faced with the escalating threat to his substantial investment, Cage moved quickly to mitigate further damage. Just days after the sinkhole first appeared, legal and property filings revealed that the actor had taken decisive action by filing three separate permits with city officials, including an emergency building permit. The approved proposals outlined plans for the removal of sinkhole-related asphalt debris, the installation of essential shoring structures, and specialized excavation to allow for comprehensive soil sample collection. Subsequent measures reportedly involved placing sandbags along the beach and the exterior perimeter of the home to fend off further erosion.

The coastal property, which Cage acquired for $10.5 million in 2024, now bears little resemblance to the luxurious retreat it was designed to be. Situated in one of California’s most exclusive oceanfront enclaves, the multi-story residence boasts high-end amenities including soaring glass walls, multiple spacious bedrooms, a gourmet chef’s kitchen, an enclosed garage equipped with elevator access, and a rooftop deck featuring a jacuzzi that overlooks an isolated stretch of beach.

The home itself carries a rich local history, having been originally constructed in the 1990s by the late Jose Liberman, co-founder of Liberman Broadcasting. The property remained within the Liberman family for decades until it was eventually sold to Cage.

While dealing with the logistics of temporary hotel living and navigating the complex permitting and repair processes required to salvage his Malibu estate, Cage continues to maintain a busy professional and personal schedule.

Born Nicolas Kim Coppola, the actor comes from one of Hollywood’s most storied cinematic dynasties. He is the son of the late academic and author August Coppola, the nephew of acclaimed filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola and actress Talia Shire, and the cousin of director Sofia Coppola and actor Jason Schwartzman. His paternal grandparents were composer Carmine Coppola—who provided musical scores for many of Francis Ford Coppola’s most iconic motion pictures—and actress Italia Coppola.

Over a career spanning more than four decades, Cage has established a prolific and eclectic filmography. He earned critical acclaim and an Academy Award for Best Actor for his raw portrayal of a suicidal alcoholic in the 1995 drama Leaving Las Vegas. His extensive credits also include memorable turns in beloved features such as Moonstruck, Raising Arizona, Gone in 60 Seconds, and National Treasure.

On the personal front, Cage married his wife, Riko Shibata, in 2021. The couple welcomed their daughter, August Francesca, in 2022. The actor is also a father to two older sons from previous relationships: Weston Cage, born to former partner Christina Fulton, and Kal-El Cage, born to his ex-wife Alice Kim.

As municipal engineers, geologists, and contractors continue to evaluate the stability of the coastline and the feasibility of long-term structural repairs along the Malibu street, representatives for the actor have not yet provided further official statements regarding a timeline for when Cage might be able to return to a permanent residence.
