Saks Fifth Avenue is stepping into the holiday season with a heavy dose of "Main Character Energy," anchoring its latest marketing push around its historic flagship location in midtown Manhattan.
The nationwide campaign, which officially launched on Tuesday, centers on a group of stylish friends navigating the iconic department store away from the traditional frenzy and stress typically associated with late-year gift hunting. Each vignette featured in the multi-platform rollout is designed to be playful and cinematic, capturing the genuine delight of sharing long-standing holiday traditions with close companions while emphasizing the thrill of discovery that high-end retail can provide.
Beyond digital and print advertising, the campaign serves as a precursor to one of New York City’s most anticipated annual traditions: the unveiling of the Saks holiday windows and the synchronized light show on Fifth Avenue. Scheduled for November 23, the grand spectacle routinely draws thousands of spectators, blocking traffic along the thoroughfare between 49th and 50th Streets to witness the dazzling display outside the 611 Fifth Avenue flagship. This year’s light show and holiday presentation are presented by Bread Financial, which serves as the official payment sponsor for Saks’ 2026 holiday season.
The upcoming window displays will feature six main animated windows along the storefront’s facade, depicting a whimsical holiday journey winding through New York City. Additional gallery windows will showcase standout apparel and accessories from the retailer’s seasonal collections, marrying narrative storytelling with high-fashion merchandising. For regular observers of Manhattan retail culture, the return of the full-scale window and light presentation remains a welcome staple. The retailer famously canceled the spectacle in 2024 as part of broad cost-cutting measures, only to revive the crowd-drawing event the following year.
For Saks Fifth Avenue, the execution of this year’s holiday season carries profound strategic importance. The fourth quarter is traditionally the most critical period for department stores, serving as the primary driver for annual revenue, inventory turnover, and consumer engagement. However, the stakes are vastly higher this season following a turbulent period of corporate restructuring.
Earlier this year, Saks—alongside sister luxury chains Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman—successfully emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in June. The transition brought in new ownership under the newly formed Exemplar Luxury Group (ELG), a revamped management team, a significantly healthier balance sheet, and a much leaner physical footprint. Having emerged from bankruptcy with a smaller fleet of stores, Saks and its sister brands are under intense pressure to demonstrate to the market, to brand partners, and to affluent consumers that they are not only financially stabilized but fully competitive in the upper echelon of luxury retail. Consequently, the performance of this holiday season will serve as a definitive barometer of shifting customer perception.
The leaner operational structure also places an unprecedented spotlight on the Manhattan flagship. Following the corporate reorganization, the flagship store now accounts for a significantly larger percentage of the overall Saks business, having weathered a reduction in the total store count from 33 locations down to 15 nationwide.

Darcy Penick, president and chief commercial officer of the Exemplar Luxury Group, emphasized the foundational role that experiential retail plays in the company’s turnaround strategy. In a statement released alongside the campaign, Penick noted that Saks Fifth Avenue continually strives to bring the magic of the holidays to life through extraordinary luxury offerings, highly personalized service, and a distinct spirit of joy and discovery that resonates with discerning shoppers. She added that with the distinct tastes and desires of their clientele placed firmly at the heart of the corporate approach, the leadership team has thoughtfully curated a comprehensive holiday assortment and in-store experience designed to inspire every manner of celebration.
To bring the "Main Character Energy" concept to life, Saks enlisted acclaimed director and photographer Nadine Ijewere to capture a cast of creative and influential personalities. The campaign features Ruby Lyn, Stella Jones, Solange Smith, Luna Yohannan, Divine Mugisha, and George McNally as they journey through the various levels of the department store. Throughout the narrative, the cast uncovers unexpected gifts for friends and family while treating themselves to personal finds, showcasing how different departments within the storied building offer surprises at every turn.
Cheryl Han, ELG’s chief marketing and digital officer, elaborated on the creative vision behind the campaign, explaining that the objective was to harness the innate joy, magic, and unpredictability that define the winter holidays. Han noted that by translating this playful and inspiring spirit across all customer touchpoints—ranging from the physical Fifth Avenue flagship to the digital storefront at saks.com—the brand aims to make holiday shopping feel genuinely engaging and full of discovery, inviting patrons to celebrate and create memorable moments of their own.
Complementing the visual campaign, the Saks Fifth Avenue Holiday Gift Guide has rolled out an expansive selection of merchandise tailored to varied consumer preferences. The curation spans curated party outfits for women, sophisticated holiday dressing for men, an extensive beauty assortment, and a dedicated category of gifts priced under $200 designed to capture broader consumer interest.
Inside the Manhattan flagship, the retail environment has been transformed to enhance the physical shopping experience. A dedicated holiday market has been established on-site, featuring an eclectic assortment of seasonal decor, gourmet epicurean treats, collectible snow globes, and artisan items sourced from around the globe. Whimsical design elements, including a life-size Santa Claus installation and playful dancing penguins, have been integrated into the floor plan to reinforce the festive atmosphere.
Extending the seasonal activations beyond the flagship, official payment sponsor Bread Financial is slated to host a series of celebratory consumer events at select Saks Fifth Avenue locations across the country in the coming weeks.
In keeping with its tradition of seasonal philanthropy, the Saks holiday campaign will also actively support Make-A-Wish through targeted fundraising initiatives, allowing shoppers to contribute to charitable efforts while engaging with the retailer’s holiday offerings.
