Walmart Embraces Agentic Commerce With New Agent Gateway and Safety Controls for AI Shoppers

Walmart is making a definitive push into the future of automated retail by embracing agentic commerce, highlighted by the announcement of its own proprietary Agent Gateway and a suite of new features designed specifically for customers utilizing artificial intelligence agents. The major retail giant unveiled these strategic developments on Wednesday, carving out a distinctly open path forward at a time when many other prominent online businesses and retail competitors are aggressively shutting their digital doors to autonomous software.

The strategic shift by Walmart comes just shortly after its primary retail competitor, Amazon, took the opposite stance by beginning to block AI agents from executing purchases on behalf of online shoppers. Across the broader digital landscape, the growing consumer adoption of AI agents has triggered a defensive wave of restrictions. Numerous online businesses, travel booking portals, and e-commerce platforms have responded to the trend by locking AI agents out of their websites entirely, citing security, data privacy, and traffic control concerns.

Walmart, conversely, is positioning itself at the forefront of the technological transition. The company had previously announced a high-profile partnership with Meta’s Muse, one of the leading AI agents in the current landscape, alongside establishing integrations with other popular AI applications such as ChatGPT and Gemini. Speaking at the Masters of Scale Summit in San Francisco on Wednesday, Walmart President and CEO John Furner explained that the company is now significantly expanding upon those foundational efforts with advanced technology tailored to prepare for a world where AI-driven shopping assistants become entirely mainstream. Furthermore, the retail executive confirmed that this new infrastructure will support agentic shopping across both core Walmart operations and the company’s discount warehouse division, Sam’s Club.

At the core of this expansion is the introduction of Walmart’s Agent Gateway, which functions as the company’s new Model Context Protocol (MCP) server. This specialized system is engineered to help approved agents securely connect directly to Walmart’s digital infrastructure utilizing the Model Context Protocol. The protocol itself was originally created by Anthropic to give AI agents a standardized, reliable method to connect seamlessly to external data sources, specialized software tools, and complex operational workflows. In Walmart’s implementation, the MCP server enables an authorized AI agent to search comprehensively across Walmart’s online inventory and accurately execute purchases on behalf of the agent’s human user.

An essential component of this new architecture addresses consumer privacy concerns regarding automated shopping. Walmart emphasizes that its Agent Gateway is built to assist customers in shopping for their preferred brands, routine household items, and specific products without requiring them to surrender their personal information or confidential purchase history directly to the third-party AI agent. By acting as a secure intermediary layer, the gateway facilitates the necessary transaction data flow while shielding sensitive personal identifiers from the underlying AI models.

To further manage the complexities of automated purchasing, the retailer has developed innovative technology designed to clearly differentiate purchases initiated by an autonomous agent from those made directly by a human customer. This capability forms the foundation of a new system aimed at giving shoppers granular control over what their AI assistants are permitted to do within their accounts.

Rolling out next month, Agent Profiles will allow customers to authorize every individual AI agent they use by assigning it a dedicated profile within their personal account dashboard. This segmentation ensures that shoppers can easily view and monitor agent-driven purchases completely separately from their own personal shopping history. Additionally, the system empowers consumers to maintain strict financial oversight by dictating how purchases receive final approval. Shoppers can choose to require explicit manual confirmation for every single transaction attempted by an agent, or they can opt to authorize transactions automatically as long as they fall within a specific spending limit predetermined by the user.

Walmart notes that these built-in account controls function similarly to adding a secondary person as an authorized user on a traditional credit card account, where all resulting transactions are clearly identified and tracked, and the primary account holder maintains the ability to cap total spending.

Creating an Agent Profile is designed to occur naturally the first time a shopper utilizes a specific agent to make purchases through the Walmart Agent Gateway. To initiate the setup process, a customer authorizes and securely links the new Agent Profile directly to their existing Walmart account, after which they can configure their preferred transaction controls and spending caps. The platform also ensures user flexibility by allowing customers to delete an established Agent Profile at any time. Walmart has confirmed that support for AI agents is accessible to any individual holding a standard Walmart account, meaning that a paid Walmart+ membership is not required to utilize the new gateway features.

Alongside the technical rollout of the gateway and user profiles, Walmart is introducing a specialized set of operating terms specifically for AI agents. These guidelines clearly dictate how automated agents must behave, the boundaries of their operation, and the exact rights they possess to execute financial transactions on the retailer’s digital storefronts.

Notably, Walmart has established that its standard customer-friendly returns process will apply fully to agentic commerce, including scenarios where an AI agent fails to act as intended or purchases items incorrectly. This specific policy represents a reassuring condition for everyday consumers who might otherwise feel hesitant about serving as early testers of agentic commerce. By removing the fear of being financially trapped with unwanted products due to a misbehaving or misunderstanding software agent, Walmart aims to encourage wider consumer adoption.

The newly established terms also set strict operational boundaries for autonomous software. Walmart mandates that agents are strictly prohibited from taking actions that exceed the explicit intentions of the human shopper, cannot access the customer’s raw payment information, and are restricted to accessing only the data strictly necessary to complete the assigned task. To enforce these standards, Walmart has made it clear that any AI agents found failing to comply with the mandated terms will be systematically blocked from accessing the company’s website and digital infrastructure.
