When talking about luxury fashion, there are certain conventions that consumers have come to expect: sumptuous materials, opulent detailing, and conceptual—if not impractical—design. The industry has long relied on virgin leathers, exotic hides, and meticulously manufactured fabrics that are treated with kid gloves, designed to be pristine, preserved, and kept safe from the unpredictability of daily life.
Fortunately, Freitag designer Anne Bachmann doesn’t dabble in conventions.

On October 8, the renowned sustainable accessories brand launched its highly anticipated Reference collection, introducing four new bag designs that seamlessly blend artistic upcycling with high-end luxury. Featuring an "elevated, minimalist aesthetic," the new line highlights what Freitag does best: tell a compelling story through sustainable, unconventional, and inherently one-of-a-kind materials. Rather than chasing the ephemeral trends of traditional luxury houses, Bachmann and her team have looked in an entirely unexpected direction to find the foundation for a new era of upscale accessories.
“I am fascinated by the effortless beauty of objects that were never designed to please,” Bachmann says, referring to the heavy-duty, used truck tarps that serve as the fundamental medium for Freitag’s newest luxury offerings.

When conceiving the design for the Reference collection, Bachmann aimed to create a product line that transcended the typical bag experience. She wanted to design something that was simultaneously practical and elegant, one-of-a-kind yet ever-evolving. When she was presented with used truck tarps—the famed upcycled material that put Freitag on the map decades ago—she immediately knew she had found the key component required to bring her vision to life.
The concept of taking industrial waste and transforming it into a fashion statement is deeply rooted in Freitag’s DNA, but the Reference collection approaches this ethos through a decidedly refined lens. Sourced from freight operations all across Europe and hand-selected by the brand’s production and sourcing teams based in Zurich, the material undergoes a rigorous curation process before it ever reaches the design studio.

Each of the collection’s four bags—identified as the R201 Elly, the R202 Bates, the R203 Mazie, and the R204 Nan—is meticulously engineered with a sophisticated trapezoidal silhouette. This geometric choice creates a light, dynamic flow without ever compromising the pieces’ underlying sculptural elegance. While the collection features a curated selection of core colorways, including white, silver, red, blue, and a striking limited-edition black, the inherent variation from bag to bag guarantees that every single purchase functions as an entirely unique work of art.
The visual appeal of the bags goes far beyond their primary color pigments. According to Bachmann, the "patina"—the accidental, beautiful markings that uniquely adorn each section of fabric—was a pivotal consideration when building every individual piece.

“Every tarp ages differently on the road, creating subtle variations in color and character before they reach us,” Bachmann explains. “Hand-picking the variations in patina, meaning the beautiful marks that weather, environment, and even tree branches leave behind on the tarp during their first life, became equally as important as the colorways.”
Because these bags are cut directly from weathered truck tarps, every single item starts its journey with an established history, a distinct character, and a deeply personal visual texture. As the owner takes the bag out into the world, it continues to accumulate daily scuffs, weathering alongside its user to ultimately become a genuine, lifelong companion. The sturdy nature of the original tarpaulins also ensures that the final product remains as resilient and durable as it is stylish.

Of course, as the old cliché goes, the devil is always in the details. That rule holds especially true for a streamlined, minimalist design framework like the one executed across the four bags featured in the Reference collection. To further elevate the hardware and overall aesthetic, each bag incorporates a brand-new label and a custom magnetic clasp designed specifically for this line.
To say that Bachmann’s inspiration for the distinct clasp was entirely serendipitous would be to discredit the deep thoughtfulness and acute observation embedded in her design process. The breakthrough idea actually came to her while she was walking through Freitag’s Zurich factory, where she happened to notice a peculiar, heavy-duty hook mechanism utilized on industrial shelving units.

“I would describe it as opportunistic wandering,” she says of the moment that sparked the hardware design. “Strolling through a space or an urban environment without a specific destination, keeping yourself completely open and receptive so you actually catch a spark of inspiration when it hits.”
This constant intersection of raw industrial form and thoughtful, high-functioning utility creates a luxury experience that Bachmann hopes will naturally cultivate a deep emotional attachment—one that transcends the fast-paced cycle of typical fashion consumption. In an era defined by fast fashion and disposable goods, Freitag’s latest venture offers a direct counter-narrative grounded in longevity and personal connection.

“Emotional attachment prevents waste,” Bachmann notes, summarizing the driving philosophy behind the brand. “What we love and share a history with, we rarely throw away.”
True to the core tenets of the Freitag brand, the Reference collection successfully extends a circular approach to manufacturing without ever sacrificing contemporary style or meticulous craftsmanship. To further encourage a long-lasting, sustainable relationship between the bag and its owner, every piece in the collection comes equipped with a detachable repair kit. This kit can be disassembled and utilized to mend the bag using its exact, original tarp material should it ever sustain damage during its lifetime of use.

If there is one tried-and-true element that has continuously defined the concept of luxury throughout history, it is exclusivity—the quiet, undeniable knowledge that the piece you own is the only one of its kind in the entire world. With the official debut of the Reference collection, Freitag delivers on that promise while simultaneously ensuring that every bag created is structurally built to grow, weather, and evolve alongside its owner with every single use.
