YouTube’s AI-Powered Conversational Search Feature ‘Ask YouTube’ Set to Become a Shopping Companion

YouTube announced on Wednesday at its annual Made On YouTube event that "Ask YouTube," the video platform’s emerging artificial intelligence-powered conversational search feature, will soon evolve into a comprehensive shopping companion. The update marks a significant step forward for how users interact with product recommendations, creator reviews, and detailed consumer research directly within the video ecosystem.

Ask YouTube originally launched as an experimental feature designed to explore the potential of conversational search before being integrated more broadly into the core YouTube experience. The tool fundamentally changes how people find content by allowing anyone to search the platform using natural language requests. Instead of relying solely on traditional keyword matching, users can submit queries that are significantly more complex and detailed. YouTube’s system then compiles a curated set of results drawing from both short-form Shorts and traditional long-form videos, effectively guiding viewers through multifaceted topics ranging from step-by-step travel plans and comprehensive guides for learning new skills to diverse series of recommendations around niche subjects.

With the newly announced updates, the company is expanding the utility of Ask YouTube to assist users specifically as they navigate purchasing decisions. Under the new functionality, individuals searching for a particular product will receive highly organized recommendations tailored to their unique preferences. These recommendations will include detailed breakdowns featuring various product attributes, categories, and analytical comparisons that synthesize information extracted directly from creator content across the platform.

Furthermore, the integration introduces deeper interactivity on individual video watch pages. Viewers will soon be able to ask follow-up questions directly on a specific video’s watch page, allowing them to probe deeper into specific aspects of a review, demonstration, or unboxing without losing their place or having to sift through comment sections manually.

YouTube leadership noted that these sweeping changes are a direct response to evolving consumer behavior. Increasingly, modern shoppers turn to digital creators for authentic product reviews, relying heavily on their opinions and trusted recommendations when deciding what to buy. The platform’s internal data underscores this massive shift in user engagement. During the month of June alone, more than 140 million people utilized Ask YouTube to dive deeper into video content, representing a staggering growth surge of more than 500 percent since last December.

This rapid expansion is powered heavily beneath the surface by advanced artificial intelligence engineering. Emily Moxley, Vice President of Product Management for Viewer AI at YouTube, detailed the technological foundation during a press briefing held ahead of the Made On YouTube event. According to Moxley, the growth is driven by a custom Gemini model specifically engineered to map a viewer’s most intricate and complex questions to the exact second of a video where the answer is provided. This capability transforms what was traditionally a passive search action into an instant, meaningful connection linking the viewer directly to the video content and the creator who produced it.

As YouTube continues to roll out these advanced conversational and commercial features, the platform solidifies its position not only as a primary destination for entertainment and education, but also as a powerful and intuitive engine for consumer discovery and decision-making.
