Medellín-based design studio Estudio Gris has introduced its latest lighting creation, the TUPI table lamp, a sculptural piece crafted from dual-tone solid oak that captures the quiet stillness of a bird at rest. Designed by studio co-founders Gustavo Rodríguez and Estefanía Agudelo, the lamp emerged from a singular, contemplative observation: the fleeting moment when a bird ceases its motion and simply pauses to observe its surroundings.

Manufactured entirely in a local workshop in Medellín, Colombia, the lamp merges traditional woodwork with thoughtful, minimalist contemporary design. Measuring 25 by 15 by 15 centimeters and weighing approximately one kilogram, TUPI embodies what the designers describe as "introverted design"—an aesthetic philosophy that rejects the urge to dominate or overwhelm an interior space. Instead, the lamp is intended to occupy desks, bedside tables, or bookshelves as a subtle, organic presence that reveals its meticulous details slowly and deliberately.

Sculptural Form and Artisanal Craftsmanship
At the heart of the TUPI design is its organic silhouette, which is hand-turned from solid oak. The body features a gently tapered vertical form that rises smoothly toward a rounded head. Extending forward from this crown is a darker wooden beak, accompanied by a small, turned eye that completes the avian likeness.

The clever integration of the bird’s anatomical features serves a functional purpose. The contrasting dark wooden beak operates as the lamp’s primary shade. Concealed directly beneath this overhang is the warm light source, strategically positioned to prevent direct glare from reaching the viewer’s eyes. When activated, the light projects a soft, downward glow that washes over the curved wooden body, accentuating the natural grain texture of the oak.

Every TUPI lamp is made to order, highlighting a deep commitment to artisanal manufacturing and material authenticity. Because each piece is turned and assembled by hand in Medellín, the natural variations in wood grain and tone ensure that no two lamps are entirely identical. This individuality transforms every unit into a unique sculptural object, celebrating the organic imperfections and rich tactile qualities inherent in natural timber.

Natural Materials and Introverted Design
Estudio Gris has carefully curated a cohesive palette of natural materials to complement the solid oak construction. In keeping with the lamp’s understated character, a subtle power switch is set flush into the wooden base, maintaining the uninterrupted clean lines of the silhouette. Extending from the base is a beige fabric-covered cable measuring 100 centimeters in length, which harmonizes with the warm, earthy tones of the timber structure.

The concept of introverted design governs every decision behind the TUPI table lamp. In an era where modern lighting fixtures often rely on striking geometries, high-tech automation, or loud industrial finishes to grab attention, Estudio Gris takes a more reflective approach. The lamp does not demand the center of a room; rather, it invites closer inspection through its refined proportions, the subtle contrast between the light oak body and the darker wooden beak, and the gentle warmth of the ambient light it casts.

The project brings together a collaborative team of creators under the Estudio Gris banner, with lead designers Gustavo Rodríguez and Estefanía Agudelo guiding its realization. The striking photographic presentation of the lamp was captured by Simón Restrepo, documenting how the piece interacts with light and shadow in domestic environments.

As made-to-order production continues out of their base in Colombia, Estudio Gris positions TUPI as both a functional luminaire and a quiet meditation on nature, stillness, and material honesty. Through its thoughtful synthesis of form, function, and local craftsmanship, the table lamp offers a grounded alternative to mass-produced interior accessories, bringing a touch of organic tranquility into contemporary living spaces.
