Phillips Announces "Stopping Time": The Legendary Pucci Papaleo Rolex Chronograph Collection Heading to Geneva

This November, the prestigious auction house Phillips is set to present Stopping Time, an extraordinary curated selection of 16 vintage Rolex chronographs belonging to renowned collector, author, and publisher Pucci Papaleo. The offering will form a cornerstone of The Geneva Watch Auction: XXIV, scheduled for November 7 and 8 at the landmark Hotel President Wilson.

The upcoming sale represents the first installment of Mr. Papaleo’s legendary personal collection, which encompasses approximately 70 Rolex chronographs dating from the 1930s through the 1970s. Universally recognized for their remarkable condition, many of the timepieces in the collection can be rightly described by the highly coveted industry term "unpolished." For this initial showcase, Phillips has assembled 16 watches that act as a compact, masterclass survey of the evolution of the Rolex chronograph. The curation traces the trajectory from early, rare pre-Oyster chronograph pieces to the robust waterproof chronographs of the 1940s and 1950s, and ultimately culminates in the iconic Cosmograph Daytona.

The Publisher Becomes a Collector

To suggest that Mr. Papaleo harbors a passion for vintage Rolex would be an understatement; his dedication to the brand is so profound that he even gave his children watch-inspired names. Beyond assembling one of the world’s most revered private troves of vintage Rolex timepieces, Mr. Papaleo has fundamentally shaped global horological knowledge as a publisher. He has produced a series of definitive reference books that are routinely cited as authoritative sources in major auction catalogues around the globe.

Mr. Papaleo’s journey into the world of horology grew organically out of a distinguished career in publishing. He initially began his professional life managing a small, independent publishing house focused on creating high-end, exquisitely photographed guidebooks to historic Italian cities such as Rome, Venice, and Milan. According to his own accounts, his fascination with mechanical watches began "many years later." Auction records and catalog notes from Phillips trace the formal inception of Mr. Papaleo’s focused collecting journey in the late 1980s, a period when vintage watch collecting was transitioning from a niche hobby into a sophisticated global market.

He successfully bridged his professional publishing expertise with his burgeoning personal passion around 1996 by launching OM-Orologi & Market, a specialized magazine dedicated to classified advertisements for fine timepieces. This foundational venture soon paved the way for exhaustive, beautifully crafted reference books, beginning with the landmark 2004 publication I Cronografi Rolex – La Leggenda.

Mr. Papaleo’s direct involvement with the high-stakes auction world blossomed further with Christie’s landmark Rolex Daytona Lesson One sale in 2013. Working alongside Aurel Bacs—who was then leading watch sales at Christie’s—Mr. Papaleo played a pivotal role in selecting the 50 exceptional watches featured in the auction, drawing extensively from private collections to source Daytonas preserved in mint or near-mint condition.

Furthermore, Mr. Papaleo’s specialized publishing house has collaborated closely with Phillips on multiple occasions, producing major auction catalogues including Rolex Milestones in 2016 and the celebrated Daytona Ultimatum in 2018. The latter sale was directly inspired by his own comprehensive reference work, Ultimate Rolex Daytona.

Given his decades-long dedication to documenting and elevating the discourse surrounding the brand, it is little surprise that Aurel Bacs and Livia Russo of Phillips credit Mr. Papaleo with playing "a significant role in bringing Rolex to the position it occupies in the collecting world today."

The Watches

The 16-watch selection heading to Geneva highlights the incredible depth, mechanical diversity, and aesthetic brilliance of Mr. Papaleo’s collection. Among the earliest highlights presented by Phillips is lot 99, a stainless steel reference 3525 dating to approximately 1940, presented on a classic "beads of rice" bracelet. As an early-generation example, it features its unique case number stamped prominently on the exterior. The official catalogue entry notes that both steps of the bezel remain exceptionally sharp, while describing the dial—which is distinctively double-signed "Prouds Sydney"—as having aged gracefully to a warm, even vanilla patina. Phillips dates the reference 3525 to 1939, identifying it as Rolex’s very first chronograph housed in an Oyster waterproof case, noting that they know of no other surviving market example bearing the "Prouds" retail signature.

Another magnificent early piece is lot 24, a rare pink gold reference 3335 dating to circa 1941. Measuring an impressive 37 millimeters in diameter, it stands out as one of Rolex’s larger vintage chronographs of the era. The watch features a striking concave bezel and an oversized 12-hour register. Its precious metal case retains pronounced, crisp bevels alongside a sharply defined hallmark situated neatly beneath the lug. Adding to its historical provenance, the warm pink dial is signed by Monetti, the venerable Naples-based retailer whose corporate roots trace back to 1904.

Bringing the chronological narrative forward to the golden age of the Daytona is lot 22: a stainless steel reference 6239 dating to circa 1969. Phillips dates the debut of this landmark reference to 1963, rightly defining it as the foundational Cosmograph Daytona and the very first Rolex chronograph to incorporate a tachymeter scale directly onto the outer bezel. This particular specimen features a black "Paul Newman" dial in the rare and coveted variant known as the "Musketeer." On this specific layout, the characteristic azurage pattern covers only the inner portion of each sub-dial, giving way to a smooth, sloped outer section that cascades gently down to the main dial plane.

Perhaps nothing illustrates Mr. Papaleo’s profound and lasting influence on the vintage Rolex market quite like lot 208, a rare square-cased reference 3830 crafted in yellow gold. Featuring a stepped, 30-millimeter case and a champagne dial signed by the prominent Milan retailer Verga, it holds the distinction of being the only known example of this specific reference to have ever successfully appeared at public auction.

When this exact timepiece last crossed the auction block in November 2004, it realized approximately US$36,700—notably, the exact same year Mr. Papaleo published his seminal work, I Cronografi Rolex – La Leggenda. This November in Geneva, more than two decades later, this singular watch returns to the public eye, carrying an ambitious pre-sale estimate of over CHF 1 million, equivalent to roughly US$1.24 million.
